Kristen Phelps scored a goal 24 seconds into the second five-minute sudden death overtime period to advance Pinecrest into the fourth round of the 4A state soccer playoffs with a 2-1 win.
In Wednesday’ match played in Fayetteville, the Patriots and Terry Sanford had battled for more than 105 minutes when Phelps received a pass from Antonia Meyers and buried her shot in the net from about 15 yards away.
The victory earns coach Todd Abbey’s squad, now 19-3-1, a date with undefeated Hoggard (23-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday in Wilmington. Terry Sanford finished the season with a record of 20-2 with both losses coming against the Patriots.
The Patriots spent a good part of the evening playing catch-up after Taylor Cavazos scored for the Bulldogs in the third minute. The lead held up until the 19th minute of the second half when Phelps lofted a ball into the Bulldog penalty box that was finished by Meyers, making it 1-1.
Abbey was starting to write down his list of kickers for the anticipated penalty kick shootout that was less than five minutes away when Bailey Pages controlled the ball shortly after the kickoff. The senior connected with Meyers, who passed to Phelps for the game-winner.
The Patriots have made it to the fourth round for the second time in the history of the girls’ program. In 2006 they were defeated 4-1 by Hoggard in Wilmington. The Vikings defeated the Patriots 3-0 back in March at Pinecrest.
