Board Steps Back from Office Building Decision

In an unexpected move the Moore County Board of Commissioners, meeting Monday night with a quorum of three, voted 2-1 to rescind a previous decision to place the government office building on the Grimm property adjacent to the existing jail in downtown Carthage.

The board also voted not to seek bids for the office building at this time.

Chairman Tim Lea made a motion to rescind the decision made last summer, also on a split vote, to place the government office building on the 21-acre tract where the public safety/detention center is to be built. Vice Chair Cindy Morgan voted with Lea, and Commissioner Larry Caddell voted against the motion.

Absent from the meeting because of illness were Commissioners Jimmy Melton and Nick Picerno, who earlier voted to place the office building on the downtown tract. Melton arrived for the board meeting, which began at 5 p.m. for a closed session, but left because of a heart condition. After the meeting, Caddell said that Melton was feeling well enough to drive himself home but decided it would be wise not to remain for the meeting.

More details will appear in the print version of The Pilot.

Melton and Picerno not voting last night - coincidence that they both weren't there, or local politics at their finest? hhhmmmmm...

So this was overturned with only 60% of the Board's available votes; couldn't reschedual the vote for 100%, or even 80% involvement - or was it just not that important?

I smell a hinden agenda here, or another backroom deal... mwa haa haa ;)

"More like this story" should include the following link: http://archives.thepilot.com/September2002/09-27-02/092702Legislature.html

From the article: "Legislation rushed through the N.C. General Assembly this week takes aim at Moore County’s “lame duck” Board of Commissioners.

Any action by the Moore County Board of Commissioners between now and December requires the vote of four of the five members, under the bill introduced by state Rep. Richard Morgan and passed by both houses. "

Anyone see the irony here?

This sounds like Tim Lea is not listening to the voters since Cindy is going to be gone, and he will be next. They paid top dollar for that land and that is where the new jail, courthouse space and county offices should go. If you move the current facilities from downtown Carthage then what is left of downtown will die. The people will either move their place of business or close down. Make a decision and start building on the downtown property. Quit wasting time and money and do it.

Bye, Tim. The voters have already shown Ms Morgan the door. Pay attention to her exit. You'll need to remember it, because you'll be the next to be shown the door.
