The Moore Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at Union Pines High School.
The featured soloist is Sophia Pavlenko, renowned pianist, with guest conductor Paul Chandley. In addition, scholarships will be awarded to winners of the orchestra’s annual student scholarship competition. No tickets are required, but tax-deductible donations are always welcome.
The program will include “Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15,” by Ludwig van Beethoven; “Radetzky March,” by Johann Strauss (arr. Merle Isaac); “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (arr. Merle Isaac); “Comedy Tonight,” by Stephen Sondheim (arr. Ralph Ford); “Mineola Waltz,” by John Hawd (arr. Carl Strommen); “Erin Isle Sketches,” by Elliot Del Borgo; “The Barber of Seville,” by Gioachino Rossini (arr. Richard Meyer); and selections from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” by Klaus Badelt (arr. Ted Ricketts).
Since 2005, the orchestra has served the Sandhills community supporting music appreciation and education. It provides an outlet for approximately 50 volunteer musicians to perform varied programs of orchestral literature. Members include adults and talented college, high school and middle school students. It is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization and relies entirely on individual and business contributions to cover operating and general expenses and to support a scholarship fund benefiting Moore County music students. The orchestra is a member of the Arts Council of Moore County and the Moore County Chamber of Commerce.
Union Pines High School is located at 1981 Union Church Road.
