Phi Beta Kappa
Lucinda Morales, the director of society affairs for the Washington, D.C., office of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, recently visited Pinehurst to meet with the executive committee of the Central Carolinas Association for alumni of the undergraduate academic honor society founded in 1776.
Morales commended the members on the programs they have sponsored and the scholarships they have awarded to outstanding college undergraduates and to high school students who plan to enroll in a liberal arts and sciences curriculum in a college or university.
Since the Central Carolinas Association was founded in 2002, the association has awarded over $13,000 to students and to outstanding high school teachers. The current scholarship committee members, Jane Barnett, Alice Robbins and James Johnson, have informed six high schools in Moore County and Lee County of the association’s plans for the 2010 scholarship and recognition awards.
At an earlier meeting, new officers were elected for 2010. The officers elected were Dr. Russell McAllister, president; Jane Barnett, vice president for scholarship; Sharon Berkshire, vice president for membership; Karen Walker, secretary; and Henry Brown, treasurer.
The Central Carolinas is one of 60 Phi Beta Kappa alumni organizations chartered by the national Society to promote the pursuit of academic excellence, lifelong learning and community service.
Invitations to join the association have been sent to Phi Beta Kappa members in counties in Central North Carolina, including Lee, Moore, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Scotland and Robeson.
