Following the biopic/drama about Leo Tolstoy presented last week, the Sunrise Theater’s SunFlix Series continues the genre with “Creation,” which depicts Charles Darwin’s plunge into the creation of his classic, “On the Origin of Species,” following the death of his daughter, Annie.

The film stars Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, Jeremy Northam, Toby Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch. “Creation” will be shown on May 6, 8-10 (no show on Friday, May 7) — weekdays at 7:30 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday shows at 2:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m. This movie is rated PG-13 and runs for 1 hour and 48 minutes.

The film’s official website provides the following information: From director Jon Amiel and writer John Collee comes “Creation,” a psychological, heart-wrenching love story starring Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin. The film is based on “Annie’s Box,” a biography penned by Darwin’s great-great-grandson Randal Keynes using personal letters and diaries of the Darwin family. The book provides a full and vivid account of the tragedy of Annie’s death and its impact. Keynes brings out the deep emotionality of Darwin’s nature and demonstrates how far he was from the caricature of the dispassionate intellectual. The movie provides a unique and inside look at Darwin, his family and his love for his deeply religious wife, played by Jennifer Connelly, as, torn between faith and science, Darwin struggles to finish his legendary book, “On the Origin of Species,” which becomes the foundation for evolutionary biology.

The historic Sunrise Theater, located at 250 N.W. Broad St. in Southern Pines, is nonprofit. Ticket prices are $7 for evening shows and $6 for matinees. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available, and all movies are commercial free.
