Tuesday in Cameron, the Union Pines soccer team celebrated Senior Night with an 8-0 Cape Fear Valley Conference victory against Douglas Byrd.
Senior forward Anna Pilson scored in a variety of ways during the match, finishing with four goals and an assist. The performance upped her team-leading tallies in goals (15) and assists (14).
Senior midfielder Kayla Lively had two goals and assist in her final regular-season match on the pitch of Woodrow Wilhoit Stadium, while senior fullback Melissa Hoffman added a goal and an assist.
The Vikes’ lone first-half goal came on a Pilson corner kick from the left side, which she bent so that the ball hooked into the upper right portion of the net, giving Union Pines a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
The Vikings dominated the first half, sending 14 of 21 shots on goal, and did not allow a single shot by Byrd.
During the halftime festivities Pilson, Lively and Hoffman were honored along with fellow seniors Ally Faris, Kacey Graner, Summer Hennings, Katie McKenzie, Ellie Reynolds, Claudia Quiros and Taylor Logan Smith.
With the start of the second half, Union Pines wasted little time taking full control of the match on the scoreboard. Less than two minutes into the stanza, Hoffman sent a 40-yard free kick on-goal, where Lively collected the ball and knocked it home for a goal.
Pilson then used some fancy footwork and solid ball control, scoring the next two goals in less than a minute span to give the Vikes a 4-0 lead with 34:48 left in the match. A Quiros cross to sophomore Carly Lively made it a 5-0 match in the 51st minute.
Kayla Lively’s second score of the game extend the margin to 6-0. She then played a nice through ball to Pilson, who scored for the fourth time on the night as the Vikes led 7-0 with 23:35 remaining in the contest. Pilson’s assist came in the 63rd minute, when she broke free in the box and, instead of trying for a fifth score, slid a pass to Hoffman to bring the final margin to 8-0.
Union Pines finishes the regular season with a record of 13-7-1 and placed second in the final league standings with a mark of 9-2-1. The Vikings will host a first-round match in the 3A state playoffs Tuesday at 7 p.m.
