Carmen Lloyd created a special memory for himself while playing in the Walmart First Tee benefit tournament held at Pine Needles Monday.
Lloyd scored the first hole-in-one of his career on the 165-yard, par-3 16th hole. He used a 3-hybrid from the tee. It came on his first shot of the day in the shotgun start event and won him a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses for “closest to the hole.”
Lloyd’s team rode his fast start to low gross honors, beating out Bob Klug’s foursome. The team of Penny Salley took low net honors, followed by the Harris Wholesale team headed by Bob Overly.
Joani Moynihan won the putting contest, while Mira Reynolds won the women’s long drive contest. Mark Packard, of BB&T, used his final swing of the day to win the 50/50 contest worth $600.
More than $20,000 was raised for programs of The First Tee, according to Executive Director Bill Baker.
BackPack Pals: The fourth annual BackPack Pals Golf Tournament will be held at Beacon Ridge Golf & Country Club June 18.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit Moore County School System’s BackPack Pals program.
The entry fee is $65 per person for the captain’s choice event, which also uses handicaps to level the competition. A 12:30 p.m. shotgun start is scheduled with lunch being served at 11:30 a.m.
A corporate sponsorship of $300 purchases one team berth of four players plus the sponsor’s name in the program. Individual hole sponsorships are available for $100.
Entry fees may be mailed to Ginger Finney, 4262 Seven Lakes West, NC 27376, with checks made payable to BackPack Pals program.
For information, call Finney at (910) 673-1330, or Jo Nicholas at (910) 673-3604.
DiSantis Junior: The Carolinas Golf Association received 102 entries for the fifth Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls Championship being played this weekend at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte.
The 36-hole stroke play event for North and South Carolina girls under the age of 19 attracted 19 of the top-20 ranked girls in North Carolina and 13 of the top 20 from South Carolina. The field includes defending champion Katherine Perry, of Cary, the No. 1-ranked girl in North Carolina, and Talbert McKenzie, of North Augusta, who is ranked No. 1 in South Carolina.
Among those participating are 2008 champion Austin Ernst, of Seneca, S.C., who did not compete in 2009, and Allison Emrey, of Charlotte, who finished one stroke behind Perry last year and is currently ranked the No. 2 junior girl in North Carolina.
The championship is named for Vicki DiSantis, of Pinehurst, a member of the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship Committee, in honor of her dedication to the promotion of girls’ junior golf in the Carolinas.
Senior Amateur: Mike Smith, of Lewisville, fought off a strong bid by Terry Collins, of Pinehurst, to win the Championship Flight of the Senior Amateur Tour event held at Cross Creek Country Club in Mount Airy.
“I was jet-lagged,” Collins jokingly said to tour director Bruce Hallenbeck after his 76 came up a stroke short of Smith’s 75. Collins recently returned from a trip to the Far East.
For information on playing in a Senior Amateur Tour event, open to any amateur golfer over 50, call Hallenbeck at (336) 495-6556, or e-mail him at behgolf@aol.com.
