Anna Pilson and Carly Lively came up big again for the Union Pines girls’ soccer team Friday, as the Lady Vikings defeated Southern Lee 2-1 in a Cape Fear Valley Conference match at Woodrow Wilhoit Stadium.

Pilson scored the game-winning goal after a 25-yard free kick by Lively with less than four minutes remaining. Opting to chip the free attempt, Lively played the ball into open space, leading Pilson, who broke free and finished the play with a score.

It was the sixth game-winning goal for Pilson this season. She leads the Lady Vikes in goals (11) and assists (13).

Lively gave Union Pines an early 1-0 lead with a score in the opening minute of the match. Southern Lee tied the contest with a late first-half goal as the teams entered intermission tied at 1-all.

With the victory, Union Pines completed a season sweep of the Cavaliers. The Vikes, who bested Southern Lee 3-1 Tuesday in Sanford, are now 12-7-1 overall and are currently in second place with a record of 8-2-1 in league action.

The Vikings finish out the regular season Tuesday at 7 p.m in Cameron with a Senior Night league match against Douglas Byrd.
