Union Pines senior basketball player Jon Toomer was recently selected as the Cape Fear Valley Conference player of the year.
The announcement was made during the Vikings’ team banquet at the Union Pines cafeteria last week.
It is the first time a Viking boys’ player has been selected as conference MVP since Andy Kelly was named the Tar Heel Conference player of the year back in 1989. Kelly, who played ACC basketball at Clemson University, was inducted into the Union Pines Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 2007 class.
Over his four-year varsity career, Toomer scored more than 1,300 points and led the team in scoring in his final three seasons. He is a three-time all-conference selection, finishing third in the MVP voting as a sophomore and second as a junior. He was also selected as a first-team member of the all-district team this season, marking the second time he has gained that honor. Toomer averaged 17.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 0.76 blocks as a senior.
While head coach Bobby Purvis feels that Toomer’s entire body of work as a Viking speaks for itself, he did have some words to add about his senior forward’s career achievements.
“Jon Jon has certainly distinguished himself in the history of Union Pines basketball over the four years he was a Viking player,” said Purvis. “By being named the MVP of our conference and making the first team on a district level twice, he now has the hardware to back up that up.”
Joining Toomer on the all-conference team was senior center Chris Henderson. It was his second time as an all-conference selection.
Henderson, who averaged 14.8 points and 9.5 rebounds on the year, was also named to this season’s all-district second team, an honor he also garnered as a junior.
At the banquet, Henderson was named the Vikings’ team MVP. Senior Andrew Macpherson won the Coaches’ Award, while senior guards Eric Smith and Justin Brabham shared the team honor for outstanding defensive player.
“In regards to my eight seniors, we did not focus so much on this last season, but rather their entire body of work,” said Purvis. “We discussed how we made the playoffs three straight years, advancing to the second round twice, and have been a third-place basketball team in our conference at worst over their run.
“If you look at what they have achieved over their years at Union Pines, this group has earned its own little niche in the overall basketball history of this school.”
The other Union Pines seniors are Berry Chalmers, Brandon Brown and Mitchell McNeill.
“I am so proud of all these guys and feel awfully close to them,” said Purvis. “As a group, they will always be looked upon as exceptional in the overall athletic history here at Union Pines, and I treasure the time we have spent together.”
The Vikings finished the season at 14-13 overall after placing third in the conference with a record of 7-5 after winning their final two league tilts in a fierce Cape Fear Valley Conference.
“As a coach, it is not always easy to let go,” Purvis said, “and I made sure to remind them we will forever have a bond connecting us as a unit over the years to come.
“I am really going to miss these guys. They truly are a special group of young men.”

This was a fantastic 4 year voyage of bball watching Jon play basketball at the varsity level. You knew as a frosh this was going to be a special kid. This year was great, but I did enjoy Jon's sophomore year when he got to play with his brother Derrel Toomer. Big Chris Henderson and sharp shooter Will Maness moved up form JV and football standout QB Travis Monroe came out his senior year to play BBall. With varsity members Derrick Ross(state high jump champ) &Tony Mcclain it looked like they had the makings of a great team especially when sophomore shooting guard Eric Smith transferred from Douglas Byrd. It was terribly exciting because with both the Toomer Bros., Derrick, Travis, Chris and Eric we were playing above the rim. Tony with the penetration and Maness with bell ringing threes this team could rock and roll. We lost in the 1st round by a wiry old veteran coach and a tricked up game plan, but this team could have gone very very deep in the playoffs. Nevertheless, I agree with this group of seniors being hard to let go. Justin Marshall Brabham has been one of my favorite kids to watch represent his school. I know when he takes off his track gear for the last time this year there will be a lump in his throat signaling the end of a great career, I'm looking for bigger things down the road from Justin. Eric Smith I think can play basketball at the next level. He is one of the most gifted basketball players I've seen in a long time. If he can stay out of his own way, I believe he can walk on to any program and make a contribution. As good as Chris Henderson is I believe he a can get even better. I"d love to see him take his size and talent to the next level and truly commit to basketball; one of the nicest and most respectful kids I have met in recent memory. Andrew Mac is going to be an asset to USNA as the thing about Andrew is his quiet leadership. His effort was the same in varsity as it was in JV; seamless effort and basketball IQ. I know Bobby, Carl and Craig all think the world of him. Brandon Brown has mad skills and incredible athletic ability as does Mithchell McNeil. Brandon could also play at the next level given the the right opportunity. As far as I am concerned Mitchell can play football anywhere, there again given the opportunity. Barry Chalmers could have played more and never hurt the team when he was in. I remember last year when he played an entire period and once this year when he played for an extended time and he played well and contributed; the consummate team player. Without team members like Barry Duke and Carolina would not be as successful as they are. It's time for an old man to turn the page and turn out the lights and extend my best wishes to a very special group of high school athletes who will always hold a special place in all of us who watched you try to grab the golden ring. The future is out there waiting for you, stay safe and healthy; never stop trying to grab that golden ring. Peace

Thank you for your modest words about our athletes. I too feel the same way. A great group of boys that grew up to be wonderful young men. It has been a pleasure and a wonderful ride its a shame it has to come to an end. Looking forward to seeing these same young men play on the next level. I wish them well in all their endeavors.
