Jerry Wilson, of Aberdeen, is the newest member of the Moore County Planning Board.
The Moore County Board of Commissioners made the appointment during the March 15 meeting. Wilson, retired chief enforcement officer for Alcoholic Beverage Control, will succeed Kim VonCanon, a former vice-chair of the planning panel.
Wilson is one of four individuals who had expressed interest in the appointment. VonCanon had also indicated willingness to serve a second three-year term. She previously served two terms and, after a hiatus, was appointed once again.
OTHERS - The Wilson appointment was among appointments to 10 boards, councils and committees made during the Monday meeting.
Elise McInnis, a licensed pharmacist, and Kay Turner, a registered nurse, were named to fill professionally designated positions on the Board of Health.
Diane Williams was appointed to the Sandhill Regional Library System Board of Trustees. She succeeds Peter Madsen.
Assistant County Manager Ken Larking was appointed to the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
Public Safety Director Bryan Phillips was appointed to the Major Capital Projects Task Force and the Courthouse Facilities Advisory Committee. He succeeds Carlton Cole, who resigned the public safety position to become Pinehurst fire chief.
Jim McNiff, a former member, was appointed to the Board of Equalization and Review, succeeding Bobby Brooks, whose term expires this month. The commissioners then tapped Jerry Daeke to chair the board for 2010-11.
Other appointments were: Anne Mason, Nursing/Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee; Wayne Beverly, Pee Dee Region Workforce Development Board; and Jana Snowball, Local Emergency Planning Committee.
EMERGENCY - The Emergency Services Advisory Committee has called a special meeting for 9 a.m. Saturday, March 27, at the Department of Social Services building in Carthage.
The committee will discuss capital grant purchases for the current fiscal year and fire and rescue budgets for the 2010-2011 year.
HUNTING - In a follow-up of a subject raised during the March 15 meeting, the county commissioners on Friday issued a news release inviting residents to share their views on hunting deer with dogs with their legislators.
The board took no action on a Monday night request by Dr. John Monroe for the commissioners to ask legislators to support a ban on hunting deer with dogs in Moore County. Instead, they suggested that Monroe turn his request over to the three legislators whose districts affect Moore County.
The commissioners said they have no authority to pass such a regulation. They did not respond to Monroe's request for support for such legislation.
The news release, which was discussed during a Thursday night work session, was approved after County Attorney Misty Leland pointed out the difference between authority to impose such a ban and the writing of a letter of support.
The hunting issue has been a controversial one in Moore County for many years. In the audience at the Monday night meeting were people supporting both points of view.
In the news release, the commissioners recommend that Moore County residents express their positions on the issue with state Sen. Harris Blake, state Rep. Jamie Boles and House Speaker Joe Hackney. Blake, a Republican from Pinehurst, represents Moore and Harnett counties. Boles, also a Republican, represents a district covering most of Moore County, the remaining one and a half precincts of which are represented by Hackney, a Democrat from Orange County.

Question for those making appointments: How many appointees have building or developing experience??? It's sort of like putting a cook in the kitchen who doesn't know how to cook!
From another thread about Blake and Boles:
"Lea told Monroe that both state Sen. Harris Blake and state Rep. Jamie Boles are aware of the issue but expressed doubt that either legislator would touch the matter.
Does the fact that Blake and Boles chose not to become involved with humane animal rights surprise anyone? They condoned the cruel treatment of caged breeder dogs living in filth and squalor. Political buy-out by the NRA is well known with how Blake votes on animal issues. Political buy-outs reach locally in more ways than one. Perhaps the lame excuse by commissioners have political motivation on the steps of the old courthouse.
One shouldn't refer to people with guns who run deer to the point of exhaustion - as hunters. True hunters stalk and clean kill. For those hunters in the Roseland area whose dogs chase deer on my property, you should check shelters in surrounding counties to recover your dog(s). They will travel farther than you think! If you don't want to loose your dogs, keep them on your property"!

@expatriate: glad to see your post...thought you were convinced to drop off the board.
Several Deputies deer hunt with Raeford Soles and his boys, as well as Donald Duncan's clan. That's part of the reason hunting dogs run at will - sometimes all night long chasing deer in the Country Acres and Roseland areas. In season or out - really makes no difference as long as they have artificial light and a shotgun. Real true sportsman!
