The Moore Philharmonic Orchestra is now accepting applications for its 2010 student scholarship.
Last year, the orchestra awarded over $2,500 to deserving music students in Moore County to help them develop their skills. Past recipients have applied for scholarships to pay for private lessons, attend summer music camps and purchase higher quality instruments.
Applicants must be current students in public, private or accredited home schools in Moore County or be an active member of the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra and must not have reached the age of 21 by Dec. 31, 2009. Completed applications must be received by the orchestra no later than March 31. Candidates will be required to prepare a short audition piece of their choice on April 30 (candidates will be notified of audition times by April 15).
Scholarships will be announced at the Spring Concert at Union Pines High School on May 23. Applications and more information are available on the orchestra’s Web site, www.mporchestra.com.
Since 2005, the orchestra has served the Sandhills community supporting music appreciation and education. It provides an outlet for approximately 50 volunteer musicians to perform varied programs of orchestral literature. Members include adults and talented college, high school and middle school students. It is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization and relies entirely on individual and business contributions to cover operating and general expenses and to support a scholarship fund benefitting Moore County music students. The orchestra is a member of the Arts Council of Moore County and the Moore County Chamber of Commerce.
