Hannah Hensley broke the Pinecrest school record in the high jump at Thursday’s Southeastern Conference track meet held at the John Williams Athletic Complex.
The freshman cleared the bar at 5-feet, 7 inches in the competition that included athletes from Scotland County and Purnell Swett. The Scot girls and boys finished first overall in the first conference meet of the season, while the Patriots were runner-ups.
Hensley tied the previous mark of 5-6 set by Shaneika McRae in 2008 during the recently completed indoor season.
"I never expected to do as well as I did today," she said. "I'm psyched."
Moments after hitting the bar on three attempts at 5-8, she bounced up and gave her team the lead in the first leg of the 800-meter relay won by the Patriots.
Candice Seagraves won both the long jump and triple jump, and Ceci Weibert was first in the pole vault and 300-meter hurdles for the Patriots.
Other individual event winners for the home team were Shaniqua Knight in the 200-meter dash and Jenna Woronoff in the 3,200-meter run.
Double winners for the Scotland girls were Shantel Smith in the 100- and 400-meter dashes and Ariel Ratliff in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.
The Scotland girls finished with 104 points followed by Pinecrest with 73 and Purnell Swett with eight.
Dylan Gaffney was a double-winner for the Pinecrest boys, taking both the shot put and discus. Another winner in the field events for the Pats was Riley Paton in the pole vault. Also for the Patriot boys, Nathaniel Frederique won the 800-meter run, Graham Hawes was first in the 3,200, and the 3,200- and 400-meter relay quartets came out on top.
Lamont Smith in the high jump and triple jump, and Shaquille Ray in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, each won two events for the Scots.
The Scotland boys accumulated 121 followed by the Pats with 56 and Purnell Swett with nine.
The Pinecrest teams were scheduled to compete in the Phoenix High School Classic at Elon University on Saturday. Purnell Swett will be the host of next Thursday’s conference tri-meet.
