Southern Pines Public Utilities had a wastewater spill Friday of approximately 2,500-3,000 gallons from a manhole beside the first Town of Southern Pines Greenway bridge located west of N.C. 22 just north of the Reservoir Park entrance, according to a press release sent out today by the town.
The untreated wastewater spilled into Mill Creek, which feeds Warrior Woods Lake. The discharge was first discovered Friday at 6:30 pm. The discharge was abated around 8 p.m. on the same day, according to the release.
North Carolina Emergency Management was notified of the event on Saturday, according to the release.
House Bill 1160, which the General Assembly enacted in July 1999, requires that municipalities, animal operations, industries and others who operate waste handling systems issue a press release when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches any surface waters.
