The Union Pines boys’ golf team started the season with a four-stroke win in the Cape Fear Valley Conference opener at Carolina Lakes Golf Club in Sanford.

The victory was the first for Union Pines’ new head coach, Alan Cox.

The Vikings posted an aggregate nine–hole score of 155, besting second-place Gray’s Creek’s 159. Western Harnett finished third with a total of 162.

Union Pines’ Cody Roberts fired a 37 to tie with five other golfers for the lowest score at the match. Brandon Mawyer finished with a 38, while Jake Sauer and Ethan Harris each carded 40s. Connor Reilly shot 41, while Trevor Owens finished with a 42.

Union Pines takes to the course again Monday at Woodlake Country Club for the second seven-school conference meet starting at 2 p.m.

asu88 and rd28327 who are you to say that hes not a "COACH" and a "school approved chaperone". And if your so concerned with it maybe yall should had applied for the postion!!! I have had Mr.Cox as a teacher and coach. I believe he is well qualified for this position as the golf coach!!! And does above and beyond for all his students and his team!!! As your parents alway told you If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all!!!

Just kidding here ac07. Alan's a good guy. And Lord knows I don't know how to play golf!

@ac07 What subject does A. Cox teach...auto repair. I don't think the word coach and golf belong in the same headline. A coach leads a team..such as a football team...baseball team..baskeball team. A group of students playing a round of golf and then adding their scores up for a "team total" is not a "team sport" to me. When during the "game" can a golf coach instruct his players...when can he call a time out? Enjoy the game of golf if you wish but reserve the title of "coach" for true team sports. I agree with RD28327 Alan is a good guy...but my first comment above was not about Alan it was about the title of "Golf Coach".

Well irrespective of how you feel about "Coach" Cox, ASU88, you have done a good job insulting a burgeoning and apparently critical profession as it relates to golf coaches. Have you heard the names of Ledbetter, Haney, Harmon (all of them), Smith, Pelz and all the guys at the golf school at Pinehurst just to name a few. It seems as though Els, Tiger, Phil and the boys in the PGA think their pretty good as do the gals in the LPGA.

There are putting coaches , swing coaches and short game coaches like Pelz and Smith and some just do it all including them. A good coach can make all the difference in golf and tennis..... just take a look at John Frye, the epitome of a great high school tennis coach.

It all really starts in high school (although some of these golfers are very competitive in order to be prepared for high school as are some tennis players) and the Golf Coach can make a huge difference to a golfing stud like Robert Hoadley who will make his mark at UNC-G. I've been to a few high school tournaments and they do play as a team and are individually scored to determine who the state champ will be at the end of Spring: by the way UP 2009 Grad Robert Hoadley captured the title twice in his Sophomore and Senior years.

I know you are a great alumni and supporter of UP athletics, nevertheless I think you are missing the boat boat on UP golf. Both the boys and girls teams are well coached. More importantly, I GOTTA give you Street Creds for knowing your BAR-B-QUE! Those places you mentioned to Rube in your previous blog are both outstanding establishments. By the way Rube enjoyed himself just fine at Bill's and went a little off his diet and sampled the Banana Pudding; ask him about that next time you see him. Peace.

Welcome aboard Coach Cox and continued success on the links.

@ HeelsHope Fan "Golf-School" = Teacher...not Coach! I just feel that golf is an individual sport and not a team sport. Best of luck to the UP Golfers as you hone your skills!

@Mtnneer88 & ASU88fan: In high school they have a "Team" conference champion, a team regional champion and a team state champ....just like the 07-08 Lady Vikes were the 1-3A back to back State Golf Team Champions....

same goes for college....

track is also an individual sport as is swimming to some degree...so would that mean Nat Carter is not a coach.... to me I just don;t follow the logic in not acquiescing to the fact that Cox is the Union Pines Boys' Golf Coach

He is also the long time trainer for the Viking varsity and jayvee football team's

@Flactem, And you went to college where? GOLF is not a "team" sport! Have you ever seen a golf coach call a time out and instruct his players what to do next to defeat the opposing team. Do golf "team" members have practice sessions together...no they play practice rounds by themselves. Track has relay teams that must practice together...tennis has double teams that must practice together. I guess the bass fishing team at NC State has a "coach" as well? @fm2 Speaking of logic...what does the fact that Cox is a long time trainer for varsity and JV football have to do with this story? I long for the days of Woodrow Wilhoit...a real sports reporter! Do you think they will ever name a football stadium after you...? I think not. I trust that you are aware of the legend of "Mr Woody"?

@ASU...

The fact that he is a trainer has nothing to do with the web story....but it does have everything to do with the fact that Cox devotes a large chunk of his life to Union Pines athletics. I posted it to serve as an indirect reply to your comment about his teaching "auto-repair"...but it seems you did not catch my drift...

...to me the tone and implications you made concerning Cox ( who is a friend of mine) were short-sided, snobbish, and cruel...Since when is there something wrong with being an Auto-Repair teacher????? For me it is a noble profession...but I guess I am not among the selected few who are worthy of standing in judgment of my fellow man

Nevertheless, you are entitled to your opinion on both Cox, and myself. As for your question: I am not sure what the future holds for me but my potential is unlimited, that I assure you... Now will a stadium be named after me???...maybe, maybe not...but I plan on leaving my mark -- and an indelible one at that (and of course I am aware of Woodrow Wilhoit...you should already know that though, if you read any of my football, track or soccer stories)

If you must assassinate my character, that is your prerogative, just like you are entitled to your opinion. However I assure you I am not at all daunted by it.

I do have a great idea from some experts concerning what they think about my abilities as a sports reporter including: John Frye, Jim Thomas, Bobby Purvis, Carl Salmon, Craig Cameron, Nat Carter, Elwood Baker, Robin Lea, Julie Cencer, Leslie Fish, Jeremy Blake, Chad Hill, Valerie Maness, John Lewkowicz and Archie Kelly along with hundreds of student-athletes and their families ....I tell you AS88 -- old sport...those are all opinions I most certainly value and constantly concern myself with...

Oh, and thanks for reading as well as being a part of this interactive online news community...that was one the whole points of this entire overhaul anyhow ;)

@RFM2 I am not saying that teaching auto repair is not a noble profession. I'm sure Alan does a great job in that subject since he was brought up in his father's repair business in Carthage and this family owned auto repair business does a wonderful service for their customers. As far as Alan devoting his time to UP Athletics...isn't that his JOB...does he not get compensated for his duties? Wow I see you like to drop names re. your reporting abilities...did you leave any UP coaches name off the list..you almost named the entire UP staff. I wonder what Alan thinks about your reporting abilities..since you left his name off of your list of experts? My disagreement with your opinion is that Golf Coach is a term I feel should not be used to describe the position of one who instructs individuals in a non-team sport. I am not trying to "assassinate" your character...just trying to ruffle your feathers...so hang in there young sport and maybe one day you can follow in the steps of the Master of Sports reporting on the local level...the late, great "Woody W"

@ASU88

I appreciate your response and do see where you are coming from about the whole "coach" thing.

I also like the back and forth and welcome more of it in the future, just wanted to let you know I try my best to cover Union Pines as well as other schools I cover to the best of my abilities.

The thing about using the word "coach" in the headline from a journalistic standpoint is this: It draws in reader attention...because people will say..."okay UP won and has a new coach, let me read more to find out who it is and how the boys did."

Regardless of your opinion, the fact is that both golf teams have people with the official title of "head coach" and it is news worthy whenever a new coach takes over, thus the headline,

Also I appreciate your opinion about Tiger's U.S. Open not being among the greatest single achievements in sporting history as you stated on my blog. Just I would like to hear your opinion on what is/are some of the greatest ones since you think that isn't, instead of you just dismissing my pick without offering an alternative

But by all means please keep the comments coming....I am glad at least some people are reading and responding...and also keep on keeping me on my toes, because I feel I am best when I am on them ;)

all my best

@fwm2 The jury is still out on my choice for the greatest sports moment in history...stay tuned I will make my choice known soon! I'm glad you played sports in high school...I too played sports....I was a starter in two sports for 3 years on the varsity level. Were you a starter or were you just on the team?(my bad this reply was in re. to another blog of yours) Thanks for covering the sports to the best of your ability..that's all one can ask of a person..to give it your all! Speaking of giving it your all...have you ever covered the local Special Olympics? I have been fortunate enough to see some of the greatest moments in sports while watching this event. The true defn. of sportmanship at it's best. No sponsers...no affairs...no contracts...no labor strikes....no fighting...no cursing! Just the ture will and determination to run the race and give it your all! There you have it...my choice for the greatest sporting event in history is the Special Olympics....you may pick any year that this event is held! Life is good when you see athletes running a race an one of the runners stumbles and falls down and the rest of the runners stop to go back an assist their fellow athlete to their feet and wrap there arms around them to assist them to the finish line...where all are winners. Keep up the good work FWM2 and I enjoy our friendly debates. Did you give RD28327 "Rube" a ride to G'ville for the UP girls playoff game? I'm sure Rube kept the refs. on their toes as well. Stay on your toes man and be sure to keep your foot out of your mouth! :) Gotta run and complete my NCAA office pool brackets (not for money...just in case any LEO's read this blog) ;) Got to love the Jay- hawks to show me the money!

@Flactem So you work at a local chain discount store as an over educated manager! What was your major at UNC? "ASU tells you all you need to know"...it should...great education...great location and very few preppie boys in coats and ties in class. Did you take any classes under John Edwards when you were at UNC? I bet your mommy and daddy sent their little "Bif" off to school in a new Benz and you never had to "work" to earn your education! Liberal cess-pool was a perfect fit for you I'm sure! Campbell is a fine university...too bad their sport teams SUCK! As an Alumni of Campbell Univ. you need to donate your fair share of funds so they can have a real football team! Have you seen their field and fieldhouse? I've seen better facilities at numerous high schools through out NC. Let's see...can you name the only Univ. in North Carolina history to win a National Champinionship in football...or should I say 3 back to back to back titles. Do you think your heels or camels could ever beat Mich. in their house? This was in case you forgot a sports blog. You can keep your wine...while I enjoy my "shine"! Go Apps! Higher education in NC starts at 3,335 ft. above sea level!
