Parents Organize to Save Charter School

Parents of students that attend the Academy of Moore County are organizing a fight to save the charter school.

Last week the State Board of Education denied a request to renew the school’s charter for an additional three years.

The decision has upset parents who firmly believe in the school’s mission. About 30 parents gathered at the school this morning to discuss ways to raise awareness about the issue. They’ve created a Facebook group, and are planning to contact state and federal elected officials about the situation.

State Rep. Jamie Boles of Moore County attended the meeting and expressed his support for the parents’ effort. He also voiced his confusion over why the state board would make such a decision.

The state cited the school’s “low performance” as its reason for not renewing the charter.

“The State Board of Education looked at the school’s performance, which was low, and debated the issue, and felt the Board should not continue its charter,” said Sara Clark, spokesperson for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

Allyson Schoen, the school’s director of education, maintains the state is looking at past testing data, which does not adequately portray the school’s recent progress. Despite its past struggles where it failed to meet expected growth as defined by state and federal adequate yearly progress (AYP), the school has opened a new $2.2 million facility this year and has invested heavily in technology.

The Academy met AYP and expected growth goals for the 2008-09 school year. It was identified as a priority school, meaning that less than 60 percent of its students’ scores were at or above achievement level III on state testing.

The school is appealing the decision, but if those efforts fail, it will close it doors on June 30.

Our children need options. Schools like these are made to accommodate children who might need a different style of learning that a traditional public school setting would not accommodate.

We will contiune to fight this, for our children. They are the little ones that are not being heard, or maybe people are just not listening. This is a great school, and wonderful teachers.

Parents and teachers work together to design an IEP for children who need options. Yes, this is done in public schools. They must accommodate.

I tutor students around the Moore County area in various levels of mathematics. I can't speak for current educational value, but in just recent years before the move to the new building, I tutored a few students from the Academy. All of my students struggled with the material which is why they needed a tutor in the first place, but the material the Academy kids used progressed slower than the public school students in their grade level and was often outdated. At one point a couple of years ago, I was tutoring two great young guys who were both very eager to learn. One was a fifth grader from the Academy and the other was a fourth grader from Southern Pines Elementary studying at almost the same pace. I pooled their time and allowed them to work together on a lot of assignments. It worked great for about two months until the 5th grader’s material finally began to advance ahead. I noticed that some of the assignments were from Saxon Math which probably makes my opinion unfair because I personally object to the flow of that program. It is a good homeschooling technique, but to me it’s a little too repetitive for group study and the material is often taught out of sequence. With that being said, I have no clue if the school still uses that program or ever has, but I know some of the assignments came from that program. None of the students I tutored finished their tenure at the Academy. They all transferred for educational reasons.

I’ve gotten to know some of the faculty at the Academy and they are great individuals with good personalities and an eagerness to teach. They have a genuine love for their students and in many cases they connect personally with the students and their families outside of the classroom. A bond like that can often increase a teacher’s instructional power. I will not lie, I personally do not feel that the Academy is where it should be academically, but a carpenter is only as good as his tools. If there is a problem with the level of education at the academy, I think they could benefit from some additional funding and support. I know that’s a tough request considering the cost of the great new facilities they have constructed, but in my opinion, that is all the more reason to save it. Help it get to the level the state requires first. Once it does get to that level, it should have an easier time staying there. If it falls again, then you’ve got plenty of merit to shut the place down.

My children have attended Moore County public schools for over 7 years. I have no experience with the Charter Schools personally, which to my understanding, are also public and funded by taxpayers. If a school (which is looked at like a business to the Board of Education), is performing at sub-par levels, action needs to be taken. I understand that some children learn differently and I believe, that as parents, we need to participate more in their education rather than relying on the teachers and schools. I think that you can talk to anyone that you know, ask them about their education, and they can name at least one teacher that had an amazing impact on their lives, and probably one that they would rather forget.

I would hate if something out of my control were to redirect my children's education from something that has been a positive experience for them, but it may turn out to be a positive move. I hope that the children who will be affected by this change are only hearing about how wonderful their new schools will be and embrace the change with an open mind and excitement instead of fear.

SO WHERE AM I GOING WITH THIS?WHERE THERE IS SMOKE THERE IS FIRE.I BELIVE THERE IS AN UNDERLINING ISSUE HERE AND THE REAL SHAME IS IT HAS HAPPEND AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CHILDREN.

foregolf 1 year, 11 months ago

Woodpile- As I stated in my first comment, I would hate if my child/children, had to leave what they feel is a positive, safe learning environment. I wish you and the others involved all the luck to try to have the school remain open. That being said, if you are not successful, and you have to send your child to a school where they had a bad experience, I hope that whatever their fears are, you are able to give him some peace of mind knowing that you are there to support and help him with what ever he may need regardless where he attends school. Are there any other charter schools in the area that he may attend if AES would be too traumatic for him? Isn't there one on US1?
I applaud your determination to do what you feel is best for your child. I did not mean to upset you personally in my original comments as I am sure that the politicians that you are referring to are not suggesting closing the school as a personal attack on you or your family. They do not look at childrens names, or their personal experiences, just the numbers. Anyway- good luck with your fight and I hope that where ever your son attends school from here on out, he will thrive.

Foregolf, you made some good points about where The Academy was in the past. All we are trying to do is show everyone where we are now, the improvements we have made, and our plans to become even better.

The Academy of Moore County has upgrade to the Envision Math program which is a Pearson product and is in the state adoption. The adoption came with interactive programs for the Smart Board, the computer lab, and for home use.

Like all schools, we do have children performing below grade level, but we also have children performing well above grade level. We currently have an eleven year old student excelling on eighth grade math. Thank you for your supporting comments and for helping Moore County students.

maxandzander, good to hear. Thanks for the updates. Best of luck to you all.

woodpile, no offense, but the ex-employee working for the local politician sounds like a bad excuse. First, you included no names, which leads me to believe there is probably a little fallacy behind your story. If there is a local politician taking advice in such a way, you should want everybody calling his office. Second, even if what you say is true, they still need ground to take action which it sounds to me like they have. Include a name and you can add me to the call list.

Also, I don't know what brilliant mind was behind recording a video while driving through the loading and unloading area for the kids, but I've heard more talk about that over the past couple of days than I have about saving the school. I'm very glad you decided to remove it from the facebook page, but I think legal actions need to be taken against that individual. That was dangerous and in poor judgement.

Expatriate: My children have been to O'Neal and I was not impressed. I am happier with them at the Academy and I am extremely grateful that I have a choice. I am not afraid of my children mixing with other races, after all my children are hispanic. You obviously have not been to the school or you would know they we have a diverse ethnic group and we love them! I am a working mother with a masters degree who has a tremendous amount of respect for stay at home mothers. It is a shame you seem to have issues with that.

I know you have issues with some of the things that are being said, but your words are only hurting our students.

I agree maxandzander.

expatriate: I don't know who the hell you think you are? From what I see on here you have no class and are extremely arrogant. Sounds to me like you are all talk. Telling others they are unemployed and need goverment run health care. That right there shows no class. I really don't understand your platform on Academy. If you don't have anything good to say don't say it at all.

NC4LIFE...You said "If there is a problem with the level of education at the academy, I think they could benefit from some additional funding and support. I agree 100%!! Thank you , thank you, THANK you!! If the State Board of Education feels we need to improve (which the school has and, I feel, will only get better) then they need to provide the tools or help see the way to provide the tools to improve. Absolutely-thank you!! We need support here- not a dragging down of the school.

0

jcinaberdeen 1 year, 11 months ago

Expat...comments like these:

"If you bored housewives are really concerned about the well-being of your kids education, form your own home schools! You obviously are qualified given your opinions! I do feel the true reasons behind closure should be brought forth. Don't call it underperforming if the funds just are not there."

...are extremely insulting! How can you expect anyone to take you seriously?

0

machspeed 1 year, 11 months ago

That's fine but you need to get some class and perhaps a better education. However, I have many connections to the UNC system and the NCSBE. I have also been told that politics are at play with this issue. It will all come out in the end. YOU don't have a clue about the school therefore YOU don't know if it's politics at play or not.

0

jcinaberdeen 1 year, 11 months ago

It is insulting when you say things like "you bored housewives". You are making grand assumptions and negatively describing someone who chooses to stay home with their children for whatever their reasons might be. I also certainly have nothing wrong with people homeschooling their children, I almost chose to do that myself. I however don't feel I am called to be a teacher. I have the utmost of respect for people who teach and chose a school based on what I think works for my children.

And wow, do you like to twist what I said- never once did I say, when referring to my children- "their world is coming to an end because their old school is closed." My husband is active duty military- trust me- we know how to cope with change. We have mastered that technique! I have plans already set in motion should our school be closed. It most certainly wouldn't be the end of the world if we had to move them elsewhere. I simply am satisfied with where they are now and would like for them to remain there.

And, as far as you mentioning some people are more involved in their kids' schools than you think they ought to be- I certainly would lean more towards having them pay too much attention versus the alternative of those who don't pay any attention to how their children's school is ran.

I choose to ignore your statements regarding things way off topic like drugs and bake sales and what-not...I prefer to remain on-topic regarding saving our school. If you don't want your children to go there, are happy where your children are, then so be it and let us fight to save our school.

0

machspeed 1 year, 11 months ago

HAHA, YOU think that people are taking YOU seriously!! ahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahahha that's a good one!!!

The Academy of Moore County welcomes all parents in their school. The Academy believes that their parents are assets, not burdens. This is what makes the school so special. There will NEVER be a day at The Academy where the teachers cannot stomach their parents!

Pinecrest High School is a great school, it is pathetic that someone is draggin them into this. They have a wonderful hard working staff and I am sure they don't appreciate people starting rumours that half of their student population is on drugs.

jcinaberdeen: I am glad you have a back up plan, but The Academy will be around next year!

Can I suggest to the Academy supporters that we not respond to posts by people like expatriate. Expatriate obviously knows nothing about our school, or any other school, and has nothing positive or constructive to offer us. You can't argue with ignorance!

0

jcinaberdeen 1 year, 11 months ago

Maxandzander....I agree- the Academy has every right to be here next year and we'll be there!!!

0

jcinaberdeen 1 year, 11 months ago

Oh expatriate....Trust me, I'm not bored. I'm rather entertained by some of this. :-) Again, do you think anyone of any kind of self-respect can take your statements seriously when you say things like 'you bored military wives'? You could be debating some good points here, you don't appear to be unintelligent and I personally relish in a good debate, but trying to stir the pot by name-calling isn't near as exciting as when people make good points backed up by fact. You have to admit that you set yourself back when you have to rely on insults to get your point across.

Have you seen me insult anyone on here? If I have, I most profusely apologize because I certainly didn't mean to. I believe you can debate something and have a passionate discussion without the need to do so. Trust me, I have had to hold back regarding some of these comments and am very thankful I can 'control c', copy, delete, backspace, backspace over some of the things I almost said because I realized it didn't make me sound very intelligent if I reduce myself to playground antics.

0

jcinaberdeen 1 year, 11 months ago

I didn't say there were no such things...Boredom obviously exists any and everywhere... so does cheating, divorces, etc. I did some research lately on military divorces and that rate is actually slightly lower than those in 'civilian' society. Anyhow, but that's got nothing to do with the main topic- this school.

0

jcinaberdeen 1 year, 11 months ago

OH come on now...You KNOW you were trying to stir something up and it was insulting by saying "you bored housewives" or "bored military wives". You were making the assumption that we must be a bunch of 'bored housewives' with nothing else better to do right? Talk about being stereotypical... I think a parent choosing to defend their school is one helluva cause-regardless of which school and which parents I'm talking about.

You know, I just read your blog about leaving Moore County- had I read it before all of this I would have realized anything I said (or anyone has said) to you was a pure waste of time. Dude- you have some SERIOUS anger issues.

I love this area and hope to stay here as long as we can. It's sad you couldn't see the beauty of it while you had the chance. You point the blame at any and everything that has anything to do with this county. So what if people make money golfing or in the medical field here?! If they don't like what's available they can leave- just as you did.

May you find peace in wherever it is that you are now. Leave those of us alone who like it here, and AGAIN to get back on topic, like one of the schools here -THE ACADEMY OF MOORE COUNTY- and are choosing to fight for its right to stay open....

woodpile 1 year, 11 months ago

I NEED TO SAY SOMETHING AND THIS IS MY LAST COMMENT ON THE SUBJECT.I HAVE A PASSION AND A LOVE FOR MY CHILDREN AND THAT IS THE MAIN ISSUE HERE THAT DRIVES ME,I AM TRULY SORRY IF I AFFENDED ANYONE BUT THESE COMMENTS ARE MY COMMENTS AND SHOULD HAVE NO REFLECTION ON THE ACADEMY,NOW I WAS ASKED BY A PARENT ON THE BLOG TO LETS FOCUS ON THE SCHOOL AND STAY WITH WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT, THE CHILDREN,I AGREED TO THIS AND I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE DOES THAT AND STAYS FOCUSED ON THE REAL ISSUE,THE CHILDREN.

0

Granddad 1 year, 11 months ago

The decision to close this school has to be nothing but political since they went by scores years past rather than current up to date scores. It couldn't be due to financing, since we have our NC Education Lottery pouring endless amounts of money into our state school system. I will remember later this year.

0

JoeGarrison 1 year, 11 months ago

Charter Schools on average have a lower cost per student than public schools do and have much better success in aptitude and grades then public schools do. This is a perfect example of how the politicians and bureaucrats are bowing down to the alter of public education, when what is needed is reform. Raising the cap on charter schools, allowing for school choice, and cutting waste and excess is the answer. Not closing down a good school.

0

idoknowitall 1 year, 11 months ago

I have sat back and listened to everyone go back and forth about this situation and have bit my tongue long enough. Everyone keeps saying that “we” need to look at what is best for the children. Well “I” personally feel that the SBOE has made the best decision for these children. I will now state the FACTS and NOT my “opinion”.

First of all, The Academy of Moore is a Charter school. A charter school must have a focus of study. Their focus is technology. Just because you put smart boards inside a classroom does not make you a school of technology. Not all of these classrooms even have a smart board, nor do all of the teachers utilize them. The other question: where is the technology teacher? There IS NOT one. It is up to the individual teacher to take children to the computer lab. Guess what? Computers and technology has its own NCSCOS to teach and this is not being done. Basic computer skills are not being taught here. I have seen more technology available in all the other surrounding schools/counties.

Secondly, the teachers are not being held accountable for what they teach in their classrooms. I feel this has ALOT to do with why they are performing so low. In order to “show” that these teachers are doing their jobs and teaching the NCSCOS they need to have lesson plans in place and should be submitted for review on a regular basis. Teachers were required to submit these on occasion last year but this year these documents and plans DO NOT exist. The principal herself doesn’t have copies of these plans. If you don’t believe this and want to know for yourself, then simply ask to see them. Don’t just ask to see that current day/lesson but ask to show what they have been doing all year. They CAN’T produce them.

Another big issue here is observations. An observation is something that is performed by the principal. It allows the principal to see if the teacher is teaching the NCSCOS and if differentiated lessons and different strategies are being taught in order to meet all learners. Observations are NOT being completed. Mentors are NOT provided to new teachers.

Teachers at The Academy are basically allowed to do what they want and when they want. If they are not “up to teaching” that day, a movie is popped in. It has been known for them to call all the students in to the multipurpose room for them all to watch a two hour movie. This would never happen in another school/county. Movies have to show how they tie into the NCSCOS. Children are given extended play time on the playground almost daily. In my opinion it sounds like social hour on the playground for the adults. Kindergarteners even have rest/nap time. This is about the only school left in the state that has nap time in Kindergarten. This school has TOO much valuable instruction time that is being wasted....contiued

idoknowitall 1 year, 11 months ago

The Academy of Moore is a Title 1 school. Have you once requested to see how these funds are being spent? They are spent irresponsibly. All teachers were sent to a conference. Not one of these techniques or strategies has been implemented in the classroom. Some teachers even stated they got nothing out this conference. To me it sounded like a "drunk fest". Most of the money spent was for these teachers to stay over night at one of the most expensive hotels in Raleigh. Some even had their own individual rooms. The teachers went to the mall shopping, dined out at night (at their own expense) and got drunk. Where were your children during all this? School was canceled and they were at home for two days. Again, valuable instruction time WASTED!

Money was spent for them to implement a school wide "Positive Behavioral Support" system. Where has this been implemented? NOWHERE! Only 1-2 teachers used this, only because they were trained in previous schools.

The academy also claims to have lower classroom sizes. Where is that? They have the same numbers or close to the same numbers as other surrounding schools/counties. Only in the middle school grades (6-8) is where they have the lower class sizes. This is also where the scores are lowest. Shouldn't that be the opposite way around? It is sad to know that K-2 classrooms do not have assistants. Those are some of the most crucial years of a child's learning.

You really need to consider all these facts. Yes, your (our) children are happy. Who wouldn't be? Yes, its stress free for them.....but look at why. "You"..."We" ourselves addressed this issue during Parent Academy. Nothing has changed. Not only that, “TWO WONDERFUL" highly qualified teachers were let go, "for reasons that were not disclosed", (and those reasons are not the real issue here) but one was replaced by a TA. Many of you are upset about that, but have spoken no more of this. Why is that? It makes you wonder if your child will go downhill now. Another teacher left on her on and was replaced by the PE teacher. What is that all about? You think test scores have been low. It scares me to know what the EOG test is going to show in the end. Not only that, one teacher is not even “highly qualified”. She hasn’t even finished college and is teaching under a temporary license.

We all ourselves have had a teacher at some point. Just because we have a bad experience with one teacher is not a reason to target Moore County schools, as a “bad school”, especially AES.

It does suck that my daughter's class has to be taught by a TA but the school had no choice when they had to fire you so suddenly. No, no one but the police, principal and the school board know why you were fired. I think it's a good thing because I don't think you want teachers and parents to know why you were fired. I'm sure it's nothing to be proud of.

expatriate: Time zones. I didn't think hell had one. But we learn new things everyday, right? Also, going to bed at the crack of dawn and getting up at 5am? That makes no sense considering the crack of dawn is around 5am. However, I have gone to bed at the crack of dawn many times after a good night out with friends. Oh wait, I forgot you can't relate you don't have any friends. One last thing Macs or Country Kitchen? Don't think so... I will drop more on one meal as you will a month of groceries.

0

machspeed 1 year, 11 months ago

What grade hmmm let me think.... Well I do have a masters degree from Stanford in business. Where did you go to school? About the "you don't have any friends?", in what grade does anyone stop having friends? You must not have any friends considering as much time as you spend on here. What time zone do you live in anyway? Morbidly obese? Well I will let my home gym speak for that. Also, I'm sure you do eat out a lot. How is the dollar menu these days? I have not been to McDonald's in a while. My guess is that you are not married correct me if I'm wrong. I would find it hard to believe that any spouse could put up with such a negative person like you. I on the other hand do have a wife and three beautiful children therefore I don't go to strip clubs. Lastly, if you don't live in this time zone why are you still looking up the news about Moore County? Why would you care? But I guess if you have no life you have nothing else to do. Sorry I can't relate I have never been in the situation before.

My kids have been going to the Academy for 5 years now. They love the school and so do I. I hate knowing that there is a chance I might have to put my child in a pulic school. I have always hated them and will always hate them! I will do what I have to do to keep my childern out of the public school system. I pray everyday that the Academy will stay open. I will do what I can to help keep it open. I love the small classes and that their principal is so great with the kids. My kids just adore her! Keep the Academy open!!

Do not even try to throw the money card on me. I send my kids to the Academy because it is the best school in the area. Yes, I said the best school in the area. The teachers at O'Neal are no better then the ones at the Academy. I want you to tell me how any private school in the area is better then the Academy? Have you ever been to the school? I think not. Also, you never did answer my question, "if you don't live in this time zone why are you still looking up the news about Moore County?"

0

idoknowitall 1 year, 11 months ago

I have had a pleasurable time and some good laughs watching you all try and figure out just who “I” am. First let me say, you are “ALL” way off base. It’s sad though all of you felt the need to drag an innocent persons’ personal business into this. This teacher that was dismissed did not deserve it. I believe the only reason you felt the need to attack her was because it was the only leg you all had left to stand on. That goes to show it is hard to refute the “FACTS”, the “TRUTH”! Have any of you parents even considered doing any research to this school prior to placing your children here? Better yet, have you researched it now? Obviously not! We are in the same boat we have been in the past few years that I have been a part of this school. Only this time we have a new captain and a new school. However, this new captain seems to rid good teachers every time we turn around. What she did to some of the good teachers, my “good friends” last year just shows poor judgment. Not to mention the fact she let them go all summer thinking they still had a job and then for them to come back and be fired prior to staff meeting. Maybe Mr. Moore needs to come back out of retirement again to help steer us back on track. If The Academy does win this, I assure you my children will not be returning. The only two good reasons I continue this journey now is because I do not want to uproot my children in the middle of a school year and of course it allows me to show everyone just what this school is made of, however it doesn’t just need me to do that. But something tells me it won’t be here past June 30. What you all have read has also been sent to the SBOE. Having friends and family that are educators has given me guidance on how to go about bringing the “truth” to the table and just who to bring it to.

There's not one parent at this school that has got anymore money than I do. So it does make me wonder where their children will go. And I'm at this school almost daily. Duenzl is the ONLY parent that volunteers on a constant daily basis. McCarty likes to put up a front. She always backs out with some lame excuse. So it goes to show the true dedication any of these parents have.
