Paul Jett and William Rocchi, of Pinehurst, and Ryan Fox, of West End, have qualified for the Carolinas Amateur being played at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 8 Course July 8-11.
Jett, the former course superintendent at Pinehurst No. 2, and Fox shot 70s and tied for fourth in the sectional qualifier held at Camden (S.C.) Country Club. Cary Phillips, of Kershaw, S.C., was medalist with 66 as 15 players earned berths.
Rocchi shot 74 to become one of 21 players in the sectional qualifier held at Bentwinds Country Club in Fuquay-Varina to make it into the field.
Michael Marshburn, of Cary, was medalist with 68, edging Chris O’Shea, of Durham, by two shots. Chis Holland and Scott Azzarelli, of Fayetteville, were also among the qualifiers.
Publinx: Rob Simmons, of Beaufort, S.C., shot a 69-69—138 to take medalist honors in the USGA Amateur Public Links Qualifier held at Hyland Golf Club. David Watkins, of Hamlet, and Jonathan McCurry, of Sanford, shot 139 and 140, respectively, to earn the other two berths available for the national championship, which will be held at Bryan Park in Greensboro July 12-17.
Addison Lambeth, of Browns Summit, was also at 140 but lost to McCurry in playoff and is the first alternate. Robert Hoadley, of Southern Pines, was at 142, while Robert Riesen, of Pinehurst, shot 144. Charles Lineberger, of Pinehurst, shot 152 and John Gillespie, of Pinehurst, 158.
N.C. Women: Laura Wearn, of Charlotte, won the 61st North Carolina Women’s Amateur Championship held at Gaston Country Club. Wearn shot 213 for the 54 holes, finishing four strokes ahead of defending champion Katherine Perry, of Cary.
Corrine Carr, of Pinehurst, tied for fourth with 224 and Katja Dammann, of Pinehurst, tied for 24th with 241. Dianne Yelovich, of Pinehurst, tied for 30th with 245, and Samantha Gilder, of Pinehurst, was 40th with 253.
Patty Moore, of Charlotte and Pinehurst, repeated as the Senior Division champion with 231, topping runner-up Maggie Weder, of Greenville, by three strokes.
Carole Jones, of Hillsborough, shot 235 to win the overall State Tee Division and also claimed the Super Senior title with 235. Vicki DiSantis, of Pinehurst, shot 251 to finish fifth in the State Division, with Pam Congelosi, of Vass, tying for sixth with 252.
Dunlap Selected: John Dunlap, 16, of Hamlet, has been selected from The First Tee of the Sandhills to attend the PLAYer Advanced Academy at the California State University at Monterey Bay July 27-Aug. 3 He is one of 25 chapter participants selected.
“John is well deserving of this outstanding opportunity,” said Bill Baker, Executive Director of the Sandhills Chapter. “He was selected because of his dedication to The First Tee Nine Core Values, like courtesy and respect and the hard work he puts in to advance his golf skills.”
Dunlap will take part in workshops, career exploration seminars and golf clinics.
Tin Whistles: The Barber Memorial, one of the Tin Whistles’ major championships, was hotly contested with the top four places being decided in card playoffs.
Jay Clatworthy was declared champion after he and Scott Forehand had tied for first with net 64s. Chuck Butters claimed third after having tied with Francis Corcoran at 66 in the individual low net competition held on Pinehurst Resort’s No. 3 course.

eGolf Amateur: Bob Christenson, of Fuquay-Varina, shot 74 to win the Championship Flight of the eGolf Amateur Tour event held at The Pit. Mark Macejko, of Vass, was runner-up with 75.
Juan Sanders, of Fayetteville, shot 70 to win Flight A, with Mike Hindmarsh, of Ramseur, taking Flight B with 79. Tom Kubla, of Pinehurst, tied for third with 81.
