The Aberdeen Planning Board has recommended approval of preliminary plans for the expansion of the Aberdeen Fire Station that will begin in the next fiscal year.
The expansion will add 4,100 square feet to the current facility on the side of the building bordering Peach Street.
The new space includes a 600-square-foot attic for storage space, an emergency operations center for disseminating information, a new kitchen, meeting room, workout area, offices and living quarters.
The plan also includes a drainage system that will incorporate a 12,000-gallon drainage tank that will allow the department to use stormwater for landscaping irrigation and filling up water tanks in firetrucks.
As the project continues to develop, the Planning Department is trying to determine the best way to add more parking spaces to the station to accommodate shifts, turnovers and visitors at the station.
"If we're going to handle this expansion, we really need to talk about parking spaces," Planning Director Kathy Liles said.
The board approved the recommendation on the condition that developed plans for the project's drainage system, landscaping, parking and the specifics on the use of reinforced concrete pipes be brought back to the board for further consideration.
The board also approved a site plan for the construction of a concession stand on the campus of Southern Middle School. The nearly 13,000-square-foot stand will be located between the tennis courts and the soccer field on the campus.

Panzer13 - before you start throwing statements out there why dont you try and do their jobs just once and tell me that dont have the energy or the muscles to do their jobs.

I often see the firefighters exercising in the early mornings and running down Poplar St to stay fit. I think they are doing a fine job at maintaining a healthy life style.

Panzer13- I know that atleast a few time a year these firefighters take a test that covers the range of their duties. If you want we can probably get you in there to take the test. You might be surprised how good of shape their really in.

I believe the Firemen deserve a little more respect that what you are showing them Panzer especially because they risk there health and safety everyday for the citizens of this and the surrounding Towns and YES that does include the volunteers.

Panzer13 hope you are thin, exercise regularly, and can carry 85lbs in temperatures that you can not even image. Fire departments are able to function with help from those "yahoo's" as you call them. My tax dollar's pay for those men/women in the Aberdeen Fire department and GOD BLESS them because I know my home and my life are safe. Their size, payscale and volunteerism is the reason that I am safe and feel safe everyday. Again with these responses to this article: I have a hard time finding the relevance of your comments to the original reason for the article. It is such a positive thing for the Aberdeen Fire Department and the Town of Aberdeen.

@Panzer13
Those "yahoo" volunteer firefighters have to go through the same training and continuing education as "paid" firefighters at the various classifications. We are lucky to have so many "yahoos" willing to step up and take their time and risk their lives to protect us.

Calling the volunteers "yahoos" was a ridiculous statement!!! Where I come from, every fire department on the Island is strictly all volunteers! These volunteers make up the department. They respond to all calls around the clock, from their day jobs if permitted, from their beds at 2am and from their dinner tables. They all ARE firemen and paramedic! They do it all on a volunteer basis, no seperate company/county/hospital paramedic! So ya see, these "yahoos" do all this for the love of it not for the money. It takes dedication, blood, sweat and yes tears to do what they do every day. Volunteer or paid, doesn't make a difference!!

@Panzer13
I thought I set you straight about your above statement but I see that you are a closed minded person who needs to think before you open your mouth. Most people learn at a early age that if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything. My husband, sister, and brother in law are all firefighters, they are paid and they are volunteers. Since you are so against all those why dont you go to your local department and show them a thing or two about what you think they should or should not look like. Then have them let you TRY to do the training and the testing that they have to do everyday.

Panzer13. I agree with you, there are some overweight and out of shape firefighters. Just as there are overweight and out of shape people in every field. But there is something that seperates them from you and people like you. They enjoy doing what they do, helping others and their communities. And so what if they are a little overweight or out of shape. They are happy and enjoy what they are doing. Instead of spending their time judging and putting down others, they help them. Maybe you should try that, it may make you feel better about the person you see in the mirror. And the next time you find yourself in a time of need, and the overweight, out of shape, yahoo volunteer firefighter helps you, dont let them, since they do not meet your standard.

Panzer13 open mouth insert foot!!! You have picked on a very proud and motivated segment of our society, and I know some of those as you say Yahoo's. I myself would not want their jobs, you need to experience their training and dedication to their job. One day one of those YAHOO'S may pull you out of a burning building.....

I have to give alot of respect to the firefighters everywhere and I would say especially the volunteers. I have been in LE for over 20 years and I have been in some tough spots but I have never had the desire to run into a house that was on fire. These men and women deserve alot of respect.

Panzer is proof that arguing with ignorance is futile. They aren't getting the point.
