Prizes Awarded at Artists League Opening Reception

At the June 6 opening reception of the Artists League of the Sandhills exhibit “Absolutely Art,” exhibit entries were judged by Dr. Richard Gay, of the art department at UNC Pembroke.

“Best in Show” was awarded to Jean Frost for her oil painting of jumpers, “Grand National.” The “People’s Choice” award went to June Rollins for her watercolor of two children examining beach finds in “Treasures by the Sea.” Her painting was also awarded first place in the watercolor category.

First place for drawing, mixed media, collage and printmaking went to Mary Ellen Warren for “Mystical Chief.” Other winners in that category were Francine Smarrelli (second) and Betty McDaniel (third).

First prize in the pastels category went to Hugh Harris for “Spring at Baltimore.” Ulli Misegades won both second and third prizes.

Eleanor Phillips was awarded first place for her acrylic painting “Good Amanda, Bad Amanda.” Mary Frey won second as well as an honorable mention, and Betty McDaniel won third place.

Other awards in watercolors went to Lauren Bobo (second), Caroline Love (third) and honorable mentions to K.C. Sovari, Margo Matarese and Irene Dobson.

Alice Demastus won both first and second prizes in the oils category. The winning painting was titled “Buds” — a painting of her husband and his friend walking down a fairway in Scotland. Third prize went to Eileen Strickland, with honorable mentions awarded to Joan Williams, Betty DiBartolomeo and Mary O’Malley.

The exhibit continues through June 30, at the Artists League of the Sandhills, 129 Exchange St., Aberdeen. Gallery hours are noon to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
