High temperatures and moist air have Moore County awash in its first wave of hot, sticky, sweaty, sultry weather.
"The heat isn't so abnormal for this time of year," said Barrett Smith with the National Weather Service in Raleigh, "but it has been complicated by the high humidity "
This week, temperatures have hit the mid-to-upper 90s each of the previous five days. The humidity has made temperatures feel like triple digits, with heat index values near 105.
Smith said in the short term, high temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s, but the air should dry out some, easing the humidity and -making it feel less so miserable outside.
The bad news is that the forecast for the summer, which officially starts Monday, is for above-average temperatures.
"Indications are that it is going to be a warm summer," Smith said.
Last year in mid-June, temperatures in Moore County soared above 100 degrees, but the summer as a whole was considered mild in terms of temperatures.
When possible, residents are urged to stay inside between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. If you must be outside, drink plenty of water and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.
Children and pets should not be left in parked cars - even with the windows rolled down. Animals left outside should be given plenty of water and have available shaded shelter from direct sun.
One of the best ways to beat the heat is by splashing around in the pool.
A flood of people found their way to the Southern Pines community pool Tuesday, which opened for the summer. The pool is open from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily, except Mondays. There is a free swim each day during the first hour of operation.
Pool admission fees are: 12 years and under, $1 for Southern Pines residents and $2 for nonresidents; 13 years and over, $2 for Southern Pines residents and $4 for nonresidents.
Children 6 years and under must be accompanied by a paying adult.
For more information call the Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department at (910) 692-2463.

The worst part is having to listen to all these liberal ninnies talk about it as if it was some kind of proof of global warming because it gets hot in the summer.

PatriotwetDream, Funny you should write that..
Continuing the trend from the previous month, NOAA reports that May, the period from March to May, and from January to May all have had the hottest combined global land and ocean surface temperatures since records began in 1880.

We all know about the falsified "global warming" figures. Recently leaked emails prove that these so called "scientists" have been cooking the books for years. Some of us have our eyes open and aren't willing to give up all our freedom for this hoax.

Global climate change is real, whether man made or natural. left field is correct in his/her assessment of the data. changes are current and on going. if we were on the natural rises and declines of temps we would be cooling.(which I have hoped to see) but that's not the case, were heating and it sucks. we can not continue to deny the truth because in the long run humanity will suffer at its own hands. I would suggest to Chuck and patriot that they read more from scientist rather than politicians. Many aspects of life should not be political or motivated by politics. global climate change is one of those subject. now as I understand it information had gaps. the changes were not to necessarily a falsification of fact as much as a fluid explanation of GCC.
