For the second consecutive day Friday, Sandhills Community College’s golf team posted the low round of the NJCAA Division III National Tournament held at Chautauqua Golf Club in New York.

The Flyers carded a final round score of 296 to finish third as a team with a four-day total of 1,231, 14 strokes back of national champion Monroe CC (N.Y.) and eight behind runner-up Rock Valley CC (Ill.).

Chris Horne and Andrew Weis paced the Flyers Friday with even par 72s. Horne finished the tournament in eighth place individually with a 302 total, good enough to claim second team All-American honors for the second consecutive season.

Sandhills’ Matt Nunez posted a 76 to place 16th with a 308 total and make the all-tournament team. Tyler Coates fired a 76 to finish SCC’s scoring for the day.

“What a tremendous job our guys did all week,” said SCC athletic director Aaron Denton. “Not only did they represent Sandhills well on and off the course, they took tremendous pride in bringing a national third-place finish to Pinehurst.”

SCC is coached by Gus Ulrich and Kevin Whitaker.
