College Offers Basic Computer Courses

Personal computers are a major tool in use every day, and everyone seems to want to know about computers.

If you’re new to computers or are not feeling comfortable with them yet or maybe you want to learn the newest software programs or computer maintenance tips, the Continuing Education Division at Sandhills Community College has just the courses to help you develop the computer confidence you seek. 

“Word Level 1” will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17 through July 13, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Registration for this course is $65 (waived for those 65 and older) plus a $5 technology fee that must be paid by all. The prerequisite for this course is “Windows: Level 1” or prior Windows experience with a mouse and keyboard proficiency.

“Mac Applications,” a course that explores all the powerful pre-installed Macintosh applications including iCal, iLife, Stickies, Dashboard and more, will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, June 21 through July 21, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Registration for the course is $65 (waived for those 65 and older) plus a $5 technology fee that must be paid by all. The prerequisite for this course is “Using Your Mac.”

“Windows Vista/Windows 7-Level 1” will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 22 through July 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration for this course is $65 (waived for those 65 and older) plus a $5 technology fee that must be paid by all. The prerequisite for this course is a beginner’s class or prior computer experience.

“Protecting Your Computer and Backing up Files” will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 22 to July 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. This course will cover protection from computer viruses and malware, backup and restore strategies, creation of restore points, and migrating data and user settings from one computer to another. Registration for the course is $65 (waived for those 65 and older) plus a $5 technology fee that must be paid by all. The prerequisite for this course is “Windows Level 1.”

“Quickbooks: Level 2,” which expands on Level 1, covers payroll, balance sheet accounts, and P&L accounts. This will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 29 through Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Registration for the course is $65 (waived for those 65 and older) plus a $5 technology fee that must be paid by all. The prerequisite for this course is “QuickBooks Pro Level 1.”

Register at least a week before the first day of the class. Walk-in registration and payment can be made at the continuing education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. (no registration on Fridays during summer semester). Phone-in registration may be done at (910) 695-3980. This requires payment with Visa, MasterCard or Discover.
