The American Cancer Society is calling on those who would like to honor cancer survivors, those living with cancer, caregivers for those with cancer, or those who wish to pay tribute to someone who has lost their battle with cancer to join Relay For Life of Moore County.

This 24-hour annual event will be held at Sandhills Community College. Beginning at 6 p.m. on June 18 with an Opening Ceremony, participants will camp near the paved track behind Little Hall. They will enjoy barbecue and entertainment while taking turns walking around the track relay-style to raise money for The American Cancer Society. One of the highlights of this overnight community event is the lighting of hundreds of luminaries around the track as cancer survivors and family and friends of those who lost their battle with cancer are honored.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, and through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Beginning in 1985 with one man walking, Dr. Gordy Klatt raised $27,000. Since that time, Relay For Life has grown across the country and is held in more than 4,800 communities.

Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Those touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease are invited to make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight and joining the event.
