Nearly 200 swimmers ages 4 through 14 competed at the recent 10th annual Moore County Swim League Championships.

The Sandhills Sandsharks boys and girls won the team titles in the meet held at The Elks Club pool in Southern Pines.

Fiona Duffy, of the Sandsharks, won the 9-10 freestyle, butterfly and individual medley and was selected Girls’ Swimmer of the Meet. Another Sandshark, Eugene Zhang, earned that honor for the boys after winning the 13-14 freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke.

Other swimmers finishing first in three events included: Kaleigh O’Leary (Sandsharks), 6-under freestyle, backstroke and butterfly; Alizabeth Bowles (Sandsharks), 11-12 freestyle, butterfly and individual medley; Julia Latturulo (Sandsharks), 13-14 butterfly, backstroke and individual medley; Ryan Baer (Sandsharks), boys 11-12 freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.

Record-breaking performances included Sam Formanski, of The Elks Club, in the 6-under boys’ butterfly.

The team results were as follows: Boys — Sandhills Sandsharks 957.5, Elks Club 785.5, Pinehurst Park and Recreation 679, Richmond County 139; Girls — Sandsharks 1,651, Elks Club 713, Pinehurst Park and Recreation 607 and Richmond County 109.

Taylor Cooper, team director and head senior coach of the Sandsharks, thanked Susanne Cooper, of The Elks Club, and other members of its pool committee, for making the facility available. The three previous years, the meet was held at a pool in Sanford.

“We are really appreciative of the support the Elks gave us,” he said. “It’s kind of a community event, and I’d like to see it get bigger.”
