Pinecrest’s Hannah Hensley won the heptathlon title Wednesday at the 44th USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships held in Sacramento, Calif.
Hensley had an outstanding freshman season for the Patriot track team in the spring, setting school records in the high jump and 400-meter run. She qualified for the national event in the intermediate girls category through regional qualifying.
The heptathlon consists of seven events held over a two-day period. Representing Sandhills Track Club, Hensley easily eclipsed her school record of 5-foot-7 in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.75. She beat the closest of the 15 other contestants by more than five inches.
Hensley’s dominating performance included second-place finishes in the long jump (17-04), javelin throw (97-00) and 800-meter run (2:26.9), and a tie for second in the 100 hurdles (15.54). She was third in the 200-meter dash (26.11) and fifth in the shot put (26-10.5).
She finished with a final point total of 4,725. Urina Harrell, of Hawaii, was second with 4,565 points.
