Ridiculous Comparison

Just when I thought bomb-throwing political speech was limited to the cable news networks, along comes Fox baseball color commentator Tim McCarver.

During a recently televised game, McCarver began lamenting about the poor treatment former Yankees manager Joe Torre continues to suffer from Yankee management. He pointed out that there was nothing visible in the new Yankee Stadium deifying the former skipper.

He then equated this perceived snub of a still-active manager to the Soviet and Nazi regimes’ practices of shooting generals when they fell out of favor and then air-brushing their likenesses out of all official photos.

I’ve always known that McCarver isn’t the brightest former player in the broadcast booth, but I assumed he could tell the difference between a baseball franchise and the Nazis.

My mistake. Just for the record, active players and managers don’t get monuments. I’m sure that like all Yankee veterans, Torre will be properly acknowledged when he retires from the game. He’ll find his speech much more difficult than filling out a Yankee lineup.
