The new West Pine Elementary School will hold a community open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m Tuesday.

The public is invited to tour the school, which is at 272 Archie Road, West End, behind West Pine Middle School. The 67,000-square-foot facility has been under construction for more than a year.

The school will welcome 400 students in kindergarten through fifth grade when the new school year begins Aug. 25.

Attendance lines were redrawn in the Pinehurst-West End area earlier this year so that a portion of the student population at West End Elementary and Pinehurst Elementary will now attend West Pine Elementary. The school will help to relieve overcrowding at West End and Pinehurst Elementary that has been occurring for several years. It will also allow the school system to meet the needs of the K-5 instructional program more effectively.

West Pine Elementary Principal Seth Powers and many of the faculty and staff, as well as school system representatives, will be on hand to greet visitors.

"I am so happy to welcome our parents and community members into our new school," Powers said. "The grounds and facilities are simply beautiful, and it's difficult to imagine a better environment for teaching and learning."
