On June 18, the Junior League of Moore County, along with 10 other Junior Leagues from across the state of North Carolina, was awarded the Lifetime Legacy Award by Action for Children North Carolina.
A luncheon was held at the Carolina Club on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to present the awards.
The guest speaker for the event was Sen. Kay Hagan, who is also a longtime member of the Junior League of Greensboro. Current president Elena Turbeville and immediate past president Julia Ambersely attended the luncheon in order to receive the award on behalf of the Junior League of Moore County.
Action for Children North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit organization devoted to improving the well-being of North Carolina’s children and youth. Action for Children uses highly credible research, data collection, advocacy and education to influence the knowledge, attitudes and actions of a broad cross-section of people across the state. Each year the organization honors an individual or group of individuals for their work on behalf of children in North Carolina.
This year they chose to honor all 11 Junior Leagues of North Carolina. The Junior Leagues of North Carolina include: Asheville, Charlotte, Durham and Orange Counties, Fayetteville, Gaston County, Greensboro, High Point, Moore County, Raleigh, Wilmington and Winston-Salem. These organizations have donated millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours to programs in their respective communities that benefit children and families.
The Junior League of Moore County is involved in programs such as “Kids in the Kitchen,” instructing children about the healthy alternatives in snacking, and the “Academy for Success” that is hosted twice a year to provide young women information and resources on how to make healthy life choices through education and self-awareness.
The Junior League of Moore County is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International. There are 293 Leagues affiliated with the Association of Junior Leagues International in four countries, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Mexico.
