A Pinehurst man is facing numerous charges after he dragged a police officer alongside his truck after a domestic dispute.
Mark Monroe, 37, is being held in the Moore County jail charged with assault on a child under 12, assault with deadly weapon on a government official, careless and reckless driving, driving while impaired, fleeing and eluding arrest, injury to personal property, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer.
The incident started Tuesday night at a residence on Lost Tree Road, where Monroe and his girlfriend were engaged in a "spitting match," said Capt. Floyd Thomas of the Pinehurst police.
"The boyfriend (Monroe) was intoxicated," Thomas said. "When he went to leave the residence, a 2-year-old was by the door and he slammed the door into the 2-year-old."
Police arrived at the residence about 9:30 p.m., but Monroe had left in his truck, Thomas said.
Officer J.A. Whitlock pulled Monroe over and when he attempted to detain him, Monroe didn't cooperate.
"As he was preparing to arrest him, he put the truck in gear and pulled away with the officer hanging on to the door," Thomas said.
The officer was dragged nearly 100 feet before he let go. Monroe then drove the truck off the road and crashed.
Whitlock, an eight-year veteran of the Police Department, suffered a sprained ankle and will miss a few days of work, Thomas said.
Monroe also suffered minor injuries.
