Tom Bernett, a professional entertainer, vocalist and drummer based in Southern Pines, will be featured at the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration held annually on the grounds of the historic North Carolina Capitol Building in downtown Raleigh.
Bernett is the drummer and featured vocalist for the Moonlighters Orchestra, a 17-piece big band that has been based in Cary for more than 25 years.
“We’re very pleased to have been chosen to participate in this popular event,” said Bernett. “And I’m honored to have been asked to be a part of the new Moonlighters, who are regrouping after the recent death of their original leader and drummer, Charlie Chiklis.”
The Moonlighters Orchestra is now being run by longtime member, saxophonist Terry Blalock, who has a significant resume of performing experience, including touring with the King himself, Elvis Presley.
Bernett is also the leader of the Swing Street Band, a nine-piece swing band seen locally at special events such as the recent “Affair of the Arts, Dinner Dance Cabaret,” which was part of the inaugural Palustris Arts Festival.
He teaches drums at the Sandhills Academy of Music and operates Bernett Productions, and specializes in audio-video, special event, and music production services.
The State Capitol Fourth of July event will be held Sunday, July 4, from noon to 4 p.m. Lawn chairs and picnics are recommended.
