There’s no doubt David Chung knows how to grind out a win in match play.
After trailing for much of his second-round match with 32nd seed William Sjalchudin in the 110th North & South Amateur Championship, Chung, the tournament’s defending champion and top seed, won four of the final six holes to take a 2-up win.
His opponent for the third-round match that got underway around noon is 48th seed Gregory Moss, a 2-up winner over 49th seed Steven Delmar in the second round.
After escaping with a 1-up win over 64th seed Jacob Colley in the first round on Wednesday, Chung again found himself battling elimination Thursday morning, as Sjalchudin took a 2-up lead by winning the seventh hole and held it until the 13th, where Chung prevailed with a par to cut the deficit in half.
He brought the match to all-square with a par on the 15th, then took the lead for good with a birdie four on the 525-yard 16th. A par compared to Sjalchudin’s bogey on the 18th brought the final tally to 2-up.
The tournament’s second seed, Patrick Reed, was not so lucky, as he fell 3 and 2 to 31st seed Donald Constable in the second round.
The famously treacherous Pinehurst No. 2 course was also not kind to local competitors in the second round.
It took 20 holes for Pinehurst native Robert Riesen, the 60th seed, to succumb to 37th seed Joseph Bramlett.
Riesen trailed for much of the match before a birdie on the par-5 16th and a par as compared to Bramlett’s bogey on the par-3 17th brought the match to all-square, where it remained through the 18th and the first extra hole.
The ninth seed, Jack Fields, of Southern Pines, was beaten 4 and 2 by 41st seed Josh Eure in the second round, while 22nd seed Robert Hoadley, also of Southern Pines, fell 3 and 2 to 11th seed Barrett Kelpin.
A day after ousting Aaron Stewart, son of late PGA Tour pro Payne Stewart, seventh seed Lee Bedford defeated 39th seed Chad Siefert 6 and 4 in the second round.
Fourth seed Morgan Hoffman also advanced with a 1-up win over 29th seed Nakarintra Ratanakui, setting up a third-round match with 13th seed Kelly Kraft, a 20-hole winner over 20th seed Payne Gniewek in the second round.
Eigth seed Blayne Barber defeated 25th seed Jacob Burger 4 and 3 in the second round. Twelfth seed Riley Arp also advanced.
The third round is under way and will extend through the afternoon today. Live results are available at golfstat.com.
The quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for Friday, with the 36-hole championship pairing set for Saturday.
