Teen Group Applauds Smoke-Free Policy

We’re excited about the new HB2 law that became effective Jan. 2 and prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants and any other place that serves food. This is a huge step for North Carolina in protecting our health.

Approximately 12,200 North Carolinians die each year from smoking-related causes. Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined, with thousands more dying from spit tobacco use.

Secondhand smoke is known to increase nonsmokers’ risk of developing lung cancer and heart disease. It also can cause asthma in small children and is a trigger for asthma attacks and even heart attacks.

One student said, “It means a lot to me for kids with asthma. Now they can go to their favorite restaurant without the fear of having an attack.” HB2 allows us to enjoy our meals without these dangers.

Another local student said, “I moved down here from New Jersey, and it was a shock to go into restaurants and be exposed to the smoke. I’m so glad this bill has passed.” This is why we’re a part of the Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) club at North Moore High School.

TATU is part of the statewide TRU (Tobacco. Reality. Unfiltered) movement that gets teens to pledge to be tobacco-free. We are able to do activities to teach our peers about the dangers of tobacco use through a grant from the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund.

The implementation of HB2 is reason for celebrating. We are also promoting “Tasty Tuesdays,” which is a way for you to show your support to local restaurants. Go out to eat on Tuesdays and thank restaurant managers for complying with the smoke-free policy. Let them know you enjoy dining in a healthy, safe environment.
