For the 25th anniversary of the Heart 'n Soul of Jazz event, the Arts Council of Moore County and Pinehurst Resort present the Grammy-nominated Tierney Sutton Band Saturday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst Resort.

Sutton's group was the hit of the 2007 event at Pinehurst, performing to near-sellout crowds.

During its 15 years together, the Tierney Sutton Band has received two Grammy nominations, a JazzWeek Award consecutive nominations for Jazz Journalist Association Awards; and has recorded several CDs that made the No. 1 spot on jazz radio playlists and garnered critical praise throughout the world.

Composed of vocalist Tierney Sutton and instrumental virtuosos Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt and Ray Brinker, the band has headlined in recent years at Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl and Jazz at Lincoln Center and has appeared at the Monterey and Umbria jazz festivals.

Still, the band's greatest accomplishment is its continuing commitment to unity, excellence and creative collaboration. All musical arrangements as well as business decisions are made by the band members as full partners.

To date they have recorded seven CDs, each resulting in increasing recognition and acclaim. The band's 2007 CD, "On the Other Side," was hailed by BusinessWeek as "A Masterpiece ... eloquent, honest and magnificently sung and played."

For those who became fast fans of the band following its inaugural performance at Pinehurst three years ago, Sutton's 2009 CD release will bring new music and twists on old favorites.

From the toe-tapping beat of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" to a seductive rendition of "Skylark," the compilation shows Sutton's incredible vocal range and the band's talent for improvisation.

To round out this special Valentine's weekend for Heart 'n Soul of Jazz, the Harry Allen, Joe Locke and Nilson Matta's Brazilian Voyage will perform on Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m., with a special opening performance by pianist and vocalist John Proulx.
