The O'Neal School swept the team trophies while a pair of Pinecrest swimmers won individual honors at the Pilot Cup county swim meet Saturday.

Held at its on-campus pool, O'Neal posted 1,075 total points - 522 in the girls' standings and 553 in the boys' standings - to finish first in both divisions. Pinecrest, which boasted both meet MVPs in Casey Cooper (girls) and Kurt Wohlrab (boys), took a pair of second-place finishes, posting 384 points in the girls' standings and 430 in the boys' standings.

"I couldn't be more proud of their work ethic and performance," said O'Neal coach Owen Herbert. "Looking forward to another top finish at the state championships this year."

Thirteen meet records fell at the event, including the record in the boys' 200-yard freestyle relay. In that race, O'Neal's A team posted a time of 1:41.93 to edge Pinecrest's A team by seven-hundredths of a second.

Cooper, a senior who is committed to swim for N.C. State in college, came home with four first-place finishes. Individually, she won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, and she was also a member of Pinecrest's first-place 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

In addition to the team second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, Wohlrab took three first-place finishes. He won the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle and was a member of Pinecrest's winning 200 medley relay team.

Pinecrest had more first-place finishes than O'Neal - the Lady Patriots won nine of 11 girls' races - but O'Neal used superior depth to claim both team titles.

The Falcons won six boys' races as compared with five for the Patriots and were led by Eugene Zhang, who had three first-place finishes, taking individual wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke and helping O'Neal's 400 freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. He also swam on O'Neal's second-place 200 medley relay team.

Kevin Duffy and Bennett Westling each had a pair of first-place finishes for O'Neal.

Duffy won the 500 freestyle and was on the Falcons' winning 400 freestyle relay team. He also finished second in the 200 freestyle. Meanwhile, Westling won the 200 freestyle in record time and finished second in the 100 freestyle. He was also on O'Neal's winning 200 freestyle relay team and the Falcons' second-place 200 medley relay team.

Pinecrest's Mark Carey won the 100 breaststroke and was also on the Patriots' winning 200 medley relay team, in addition to finishing second in the 200 individual medley and helping Pinecrest to a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle relay.

On the girls' side, Molly Cordell won the 100 breaststroke for O'Neal and the Lady Falcons won the 400 freestyle relay. All the other first-place finishes went to Pinecrest.

In addition to Cooper's two individual wins, Ana Fish took a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. She also swam on the Lady Patriots' winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Pinecrest's other individual wins came from Alyssa Fish in the 200 freestyle, Allison DiTomasso in the 200 individual medley and Julia Lattarulo in the 500 freestyle.
