Southern Pines firefighters responded to an early morning house fire Tuesday on the corner of South Gaines and Indiana Avenue.
Firefighters received the call at 7 a.m. When they arrived, thick smoke was coming from the back of the house, and flames were coming from the basement, Fire Chief Hampton Williams said.
"It was a fairly heavy fire in the basement," Williams said. "They (firefighters) got in really quick and did a good job knocking the fire down."
Fire departments from Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Vass and Whispering Pines also responded.
No one was injured in the blaze, which is still under investigation.
This is the second time in less than a month firefighters have responded to a call at the residence. Three weeks ago, the first floor of the home was damaged when a fire started in the fireplace because of cracks in the flue, Williams said.
The fires are unrelated, he said.
