Lady Pats Fall to Richmond

A disastrous second quarter proved to be the difference as the Pinecrest girls dropped a 58-50 basketball decision to visiting Richmond Senior Friday night.

The Patriots trailed 41-21 at halftime after being outscored by a whopping 27-10 in the second period of the game played at James Moore Gym. The Raiders sank four threes in the quarter and a total of six in the first half.

Senior Candice Seagraves and freshman Janea Williams posted double-doubles for the Patriots, with each scoring 12 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Shaquitta Covington and Leshay Brown led the Raiders with 11 points each.

The Patriots took an 8-8 overall and 1-3 record in the Southeastern Conference into Saturday's non-league game at Overhills. They return to conference play on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. tipoff at Hoke County.

In addition to improving to 12-2 and 3-1, the Raiders avenged their loss to the Patriots in the championship game of last month's Lady Patriot Holiday Invitational. The Pats were playing their second game in a row without guards Jennie Joy and Keegan Lynch, who suffered head injuries as a result of separate collisions during a game at Scotland County.

Turnovers, a season-long problem, came at a dizzying pace in the decisive second quarter.

The home team took better care of the ball and used its height advantage to outscore the visitors 29-17 in the second half. They were within 11 at 50-39 with four minutes still left in the game on a three-point play by freshman Felicia Painter. The final points of the evening came on a three-point play by junior guard Ashleigh McKenzie, who scored all seven of her points in the final eight minutes of action.

Painter finished with 10 points and eight boards.
