Vikes Sweep at Overhills

Both the Union Pines boys’ and girls’ basketball teams started the second half of the Cape Fear Valley Conference season with critical league wins against Overhills Friday in Spring Lake.

The Lady Vikes got 26 points from senior captain Alishia Mosley and 21 from junior captain Tyesha McLean as they knocked off the first-place Jaguars 65-56. With the victory, Union Pines is now 5-2 in league play and 13-5 overall, while Overhills (14-3) fell to 5-2 in the conference with the loss.

Union Pines’ boys also picked up a key league victory at Overhills, defeating the Jaguars 49-44.

The Vikes (9-9) snapped a two-game league skid with the win to improve to 4-3 in the conference, while Overhills (7-10) is now 3-5 in league play.

Senior forward Jon Toomer scored 13 second-half points and finished with a game-high 21 for Union Pines, while slamming home three highlight-reel dunks.
