Trucks and Darlington a Perfect Match

A lot has been made this offseason about NASCAR reaching out to race fans to ask them what they want from their racing.

Well, as a race fan, this is my answer.

More racing at Darlington is always a good thing.

And it appears as though someone is listening.

That's why this week's announcement that "The Lady in Black" will host a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race in 2010 makes me very, very happy.

Darlington takes the place of the now defunct Milwaukee Mile on the truck series schedule. The race will be a one-day show with practice, qualifying and the race all taking place on Aug. 14, 2010. The Too Tough to Tame 200 will mark the return to Darlington for the trucks after a five-year hiatus.

"Our fans have asked us to bring back the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, because Darlington is a perfect fit for the tough racing the series offers," said Darlington Raceway President Chris Browning. "We are excited to be able to bring back the trucks in 2010 and look forward to putting on a memorable show for all of our fans."

Chris, you could fill Darlington with water and recreate the Battle of Trafalgar and I would show up to watch. You could race Silver Crown cars on the old girl and I'd show up.

Wait, I did. Those little cars were awesome.

Seriously, Darlington and the truck series are a great match right now. You don't get better racing anywhere else in NASCAR than the trucks. And you don't get much better racing than what you get at Darlington.

When the brainiacs at NASCAR decided that Darlington only needed one date on the Cup schedule, I thought a night truck race at Darlington would be a great event at the track.

Really, what do people in this region love more than trucks and Darlington Raceway? Jesus and Dale Earnhardt are the only two things I can come up with.

"I think it will be awesome for the truck series to go back to Darlington," said Ron Hornaday, last year's series champion. "Traditionally, Darlington has been one of those places that has close finishes, which the truck series is known for."

Circumstances surrounding Darlington getting this date may be a bit unsavory - no one likes to see something happen like what happened to Milwaukee. But moving the date to Darlington is exactly the kind of thing that NASCAR needs to do if it wants to get out of the current funk that it finds itself in.

Maybe NASCAR has finally learned a very valuable lesson - when you're in a hole, stop digging.

Now if ya'll will excuse me, I'm going to investigate how to fill up a race track with water and recreate the Battle of Trafalgar.
