Coaches Clinic

This Sunday, the Sandhills Futbol Club will host a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) state diploma course at Union Pines High School.

The course features five hours of instruction directed toward new soccer coaches working with players in the 5- to 10-year-old age range.

There is no testing involved in the state diploma course.

All candidates must be at least 14 years of age. If a candidate is under 18 years of age, an adult must accompany him or her for the duration of the course.

The fee for the course is $40 per person. Registration can be completed at the NSCAA webpage at www.nscaa.com.

Parlow Postponed

The soccer clinic featuring former U.S. national team member Cindy Parlow has been postponed to Wednesday at 6 p.m.

A member of two World Cup and three Olympic teams, Parlow, who is also a former UNC standout, is among the most decorated player in American women's soccer history.

The clinic, which will be held at the Pinecrest High School practice soccer field, is for youths ages 10 and up. An autograph session will follow in the Pinecrest cafeteria.

SCC Social

Sandhills Community College will host an Athletic Alumni Social Jan. 28 prior to the men's basketball game versus Central Carolina.

The social will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Clement Dining Hall at the Dempsey Student Center. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. across the street at The O'Neal School's Tate Gymnasium.

Author Presentation

Celebrate 15 years of the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness - Pinehurst with Christopher McDougall, author of the best-selling book "Born to Run."

McDougall will be at the Pinecrest High School Auditorium Jan. 29 for a 5:30-7 p.m. presentation. A book signing will follow.

Sandgnats Meeting

The Sandhills Sandgnats baseball organization will hold an informational meeting Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. at the American Legion building in Aberdeen.

The organization plans to field teams for men ages 21 and over, 32 and over and 42 and over in a wooden bat, fast-pitch league. The season runs from April to October.

Soccer Sign-Ups

Moore County Parks and Recreation soccer registration will be offered in conjunction with the Sandhills Futbol Club through Feb. 12, with the age cutoff being Jan. 1, 2010.

Teams will be for youths ages 5-6 and 7-8. The registration fee is $30.

Spring Registration

Moore County Parks and Recreation baseball and softball registration is going on now and will extend through Feb. 26.

Youths ages 9-14 as of May 1, 2010 are eligible to sign up for baseball, while softball leagues are for youths ages 9-14 as of Jan. 1, 2010.

There will also be a co-ed 7-8-year-old machine pitch league and a 5-6-year-old T-ball league, with the deadline to sign up May 7. Age cutoff for those leagues is May 1, 2010.

The registration fee is $20 per player. Registration forms can be printed from moorecountyparksandrec.com and dropped off at the Parks and Recreation office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Little Patriots Invited

Students enrolled in the first through eighth grades are invited to attend the Little Patriots 2010 Speed and Agility Clinics sponsored by Sandhills Optimist Club.

All athletes are welcome, as this is not a football-only clinic. It will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 1 through March 3 at Pinecrest High School. The cost is $100 for the entire clinic or $10 per session.

The mission is to provide each athlete with positive instruction in several areas of athletic improvement. The staff will be led by Chris Metzger, head football coach at Pinecrest High School, his staff and area guest coaches.

Camp attire is shorts, T-shirts, socks and running shoes. Campers should bring plenty of water. For more information call Coach Metzger at (239) 248-0808.

Middle School Workouts

Monday and Wednesday morning workouts for middle school athletes will be held at the fieldhouse at Pinecrest High school beginning Monday, Jan. 25.

The program will include a warm-up and provides an introduction to strength and conditioning. It is available for all interested sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls and will run through Wednesday, May 19. The sessions will begin at 6 a.m. and end at 7:15. The student-athletes will then be bussed to their respective schools.
