Pinecrest Grapplers Place at Colt Clash

Pinecrest’s wrestling team had two first-place winners and a runner-up at Saturday’s Colt Clash tournament at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville.
The meet featured wrestlers from 10 high schools. Pinecrest senior Zane Excell won the 140-pound weight class with a 3-0 record, while sophomore Dustin Roemer finished first in the 135-pound division with a 3-0 record, including an 11-9 overtime victory over Douglas Byrd’s Victor Zaragoza in the second round.
Junior Nathan Frederique was beaten by a narrow 8-7 decision by Panther Creek’s Keith Nelson in the finals of the 160-pound division. He went 2-1 at the tournament.
For the season, Excell holds a 22-2 record and is ranked third at 140 pounds in the Jan. 18 Class 4A individual rankings, while Roemer is 27-4 and ranked eighth at 135 pounds.
Frederique is 14-5 on the season, and other leaders for the Patriots, who hold a 3-0 record in Southeastern 4A Conference duals, include 103-pound sophomore Zac Lupien (15-7), 119-pund junior Michael Lippincott (13-7), 125-pound junior Clem McKenzie (15-9), 130-pound sophomore Garrett Bateman (17-9), 135-pound senior Grey Tampa (13-8), 215-pound senior Daniel Keith (10-4) and 215-pound junior Gabe Hackney (5-2).
