A head-on crash Sunday between a car and a tractor-trailer sent one woman to the hospital.

The driver of the car, Frances Vandewalker, 60 of West End, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill after the accident, which happened around noon, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said Vandewalker was driving north on U.S. 15-501 near McCrimmon Road north of Carthage. Highway Patrol Trooper B.R. Walker said Vandewalker crossed left of center and into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer driven by Randall Moody, 64, of Bear Creek.

Walker said the investigation is continuing. Speed and alcohol were not factors, he said.

"Everybody had their seatbelts on," Walker said. "The passenger said he was not sure what made her go left of center. He said he was messing with some CDs and when he looked up they were about to hit the tractor-trailer head-on."

Vandewalker's condition is unknown. The passenger in the car, David York, 69, of Asheboro, was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital with injuries that were not believed life-threatening. Moody was not hurt.
