Westover Pulls Away from Vikes

A 10-0 fourth-quarter run propelled Westover to a 65-56 victory over Union Pines in the semifinals of the Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference boys' basketball tournament held at Southern Lee on Thursday.
The third-seeded Vikings (13-12) took a 50-47 lead on a Justin Brabham three-pointer with 6:31 to play but did not score again for nearly five minutes as the Wolverines posted 10 points unanswered.
The No. 2-seed in the tournament, Westover made nine three-pointers and was led in scoring by Carlton Ford, who scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Jon Toomer scored a game-high 24 points to lead Union Pines, which will open play in the Class 3A state tournament on Monday on the road.
Westover will host third-seeded Douglas Byrd, a 57-55 winner over Southern Lee in the semifinals, in the conference tournament finals on Friday. The Wolverines will host both the boys' and girls' championship games beginning at 6 p.m.
