Monday the Union Pines varsity basketball teams celebrated Senior Night with two solid victories over Douglas Byrd in Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference action.

The Lady Vikings ran their current win streak to 10 games and notched a ninth-straight league victory with a 63-32 win over the Eagles. Union Pines' lone senior, captain Alishia Mosley, scored a career-high 32 points.

She had 22 first-half points while making seven of 11 attempts from behind the three-point line as Union Pines led 40-20 at intermission.

Union Pines (18-5, 10-2) finished the conference season as co-league champion with Westover (16-5, 10-2). The Vikes received the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, which begins today, and therefore will receive a bye into Thursday's semifinals.

Union Pines will host both conference semifinal girls’ games Thursday, with the Vikes taking the court in the second game at 7:30 p.m. The first semi is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m.

The Vike boys came through with a big win in the nightcap as Union Pines defeated Byrd 67-50 to capture a third-place finish in the final Cape Fear Valley regular season standings while clinching a playoff berth in the process. The Eagles finished 6-6 in conference play, good for a fourth-place finish.

Senior point guard Eric Smith scored14 first-half points as the Vikings held a 35-17 lead at the break. Smith scored seven more points in the third period while Union Pines held a 54-37 advantage as play moved into the fourth quarter. Smith finished with a game-high 26 points. Vike senior forward Jon Toomer scored 14 of his total 18 points in the second half.

Union Pines, which moved to 12-11 on the year and wrapped up the league regular season with a record of 7-5, will host an opening round game in the conference tournament at 7 p.m tonight against the sixth-seeded Overhills Jaguars (8-15, 3-9 ).

Would like to know about who's playing whom as well as when and where in the entire CFV 3A boys and girls conference basketball tournaments, not just UP. Helps to know who UP's future opponents might be as well as possible tournament scenarios.

The same goes for the SE 4A and YVC 1A basketball tourneys. Seems like I've got to go to multiple newspaper web sites to get that info whereas I could just get it from one source.
