O'Neal Swept by Village

The O'Neal School was swept by visiting Village Christian in its varsity basketball regular season finales Friday night.

The Falcon boys trailed 32-31 at the end of the third quarter but were outscored 23-17 in the final period and fell 55-48.

Chris Payton and Jacob Talbert scored 14 points apiece to pace O'Neal, which dropped to 6-14 overall and 2-8 in Cape Fear Independent Conference play heading into the conference tournament. Christian Bolduc added 12 points.

O'Neal led for the last time at 31-30 on a Talbert three-pointer with 1:14 remaining in the third quarter.

Tim Wesley answered with a basket to give Village a 32-31 lead going into the fourth quarter. Village would open the fourth quarter with a 7-1 run.

Brian Miles led Village with 13 points, Wesley added 12 and Ethan Rogers finished with 10.

The Lady Falcons were beaten 66-22 to move to 3-17 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

Katie Jenkins led O'Neal with nine points, and Ellen Cowherd added five.

The duo was recognized at halftime of the boys' game during a Senior Night ceremony. Boys' basketball seniors Bolduc, Andrew Dembosky, Corbin O'Donnell, John Schoemmell, Jay Lassiter, Jide Lawal and Payton were honored prior to the nightcap.

O'Neal opens the conference tournament on Tuesday, with the boys traveling to Village and the girls on the road at Fayetteville Academy.

Fayetteville Academy will host the semifinals and finals Friday and Saturday.
