The Center for Creative Retirement at Sandhills Community College provides programs and resources that enhance the intellectual, physical and personal well-being of retirees in the Sandhills area. Classes are open to all.
For many viewers, a film's worth is measured by its ability to reflect a societal condition in it truest possible light. No social condition is more relevant to film than the "battle of the sexes." A new class, "Gender Conflict in Film," will begin Monday, Feb. 22, and run each Monday through March 29, from 2:15 until 4:30 p.m.
Taught by Ron Layne, the class will look at seven decades of the ongoing battle spawned in the Garden of Eden and carried forward into past and present cinema. The cost is $65 (waived for those 65 years and older) and preregistration is required by Feb. 15.
Another new course, "The Culture of India," will focus on the unique cultural and spiritual history of India. It will include a philosophical explanation of the extended family structure, marriage customs, women's place in the Indian society, the caste system and religious symbolism.
This free presentation, sponsored by the N.C. Humanities Council, will be Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. Preregistration is required by Feb. 17.
Registration can be made in the Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall during the college's scheduled hours of operation. To register by phone (Visa, MasterCard or Discover required), call (910) 695-3980.
