North Moore took a varsity basketball sweep from visiting South Davidson Wednesday in Yadkin Valley 1A Conference play.

The Mustang boys (6-15, 5-10) won a 46-42 squeaker after trailing 10-6 at the end of the first quarter.

North Moore outscored South Davidson (4-13, 4-10) 16-12 in the second quarter, as the game went to halftime tied at 22-all.

The Mustangs won the third quarter 11-7 and made 7-of-7 free throws in the fourth quarter to maintain its four-point margin of victory.

"We're finally learning to win," said head coach Grant Smith. "The team played hard tonight and gave good effort and just refused to lose."

Corbin Brock scored seven points in the first half and nine after halftime, including an eight-point fourth quarter, to finish with a team-high 16 points.

"We played good as a team, and we are going to continue to play better," said Brock.

After being held to two points in the first half, leading scorer John Spivey scored eight in the second and finished with 10 points.

"I'm just happy that we won," said Spivey. "It feels good to be on top and come out with a conference win."

Sterling Barrett added eight points for North Moore, and Wy-Key Brower finished with five points, all in the first half.

The Mustangs made 17 of 24 free throws in the game.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs (12-3, 16-5) got off to a slow start but still led 9-1 after the first quarter and 17-8 at halftime on their way to a 52-25 win.

"We played great defense in the first half but we just couldn't make baskets," said Lady Mustang head coach Sammy McNeill. "We came out in the second and responded to what we had to do on the floor and started making shots. We know what we are doing, we just got to put it together."

North Moore broke the game open by outscoring South Davidson (5-14, 4-10) 23-6 in the third quarter, spurred on by eight points, including two three-pointers, from point guard Katelyn Sheffield and seven points from sophomore forward Shakorya Brower.

"We hustled in the second half and played good as a team," said Brower, who finished with a game-high 17 points.

Freshman Jalisa Davis contributed 14 points to the effort, and Sheffield finished with 11 points.

The Lady Mustangs made 8 of 11 free throws in the game.

The North Moore teams close the regular season Friday at North Rowan.
