UP Girls Drop League-Leading Westover

Union Pines' varsity basketball teams earned a sweep of Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference foe Westover Wednesday.

The Lady Vikings got 24 points from junior captain Tyesha McLean and 23 points from senior captain Alishia Mosley as they moved into a tie for first place in the conference standings with a 51-39 win over the visiting Wolverines. Westover (15-5) entered the titlt alone atop the league standings, but with the Union Pines win, both teams are tied in league play at 9-2 with one game remaining in the regular conference season. The Lady Vikes are now 17-5 overall.

Union Pines' boys won the nightcap 49-46, denying the Wolverines the chance to tie Southern Lee atop the conference standings and handing the Cavaliers their fourth straight league championship.

With the loss, Westover is now 9-2 in league play and 15-5 overall, while Union Pines moved to 6-5 in the conference and 11-11 on the year.

Vike senior guard Justin Brabham went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and finshed the game with 14 points, while Jon Toomer led Union Pines with 16.

The Vikings are back in action Friday hosting Douglas Byrd for Senior Night. Westover also plays Friday against Western Harnett.
