Lady Vikes Bump Southern Lee

Union Pines' girls' basketball team returned to the court for the first time in a week Friday and posted a 58-34 conference win at Southern Lee.
With the win, the Lady Vikings extended their current winning streak to eight games. Union Pines (16-5) is now alone in second place in the league standings with a mark of 8-2. First-place Westover outlasted Overhills 60-59 Friday to stay atop the league standings with a conference record of 9-1.
The stage is now set for a first-place showdown between Union Pines and Westover (14-4) Wednesday at Bob Ward Gymnasium in Cameron. The Lady Vikings then close the regular season hosting Douglas Byrd (4-15, 1-9) on Senior Night Friday, while Westover closes hosting two-time defending conference champion Western Harnett. The Lady Wolverines also play Gray's Creek in the last week of the regular season.
Senior captain Alishia Mosley had 13 points in the first half of Friday's contest, as the Vikings took a 29-15 lead at intermission. She then opened the third period by sinking a long three that sparked a nine-point Union Pines run that gave the Lady Vikings a commanding 38-15 edge.
The Vikes outscored Southern Lee 15-4 in the third stanza to take a comfortable 44-19 lead into the fourth quarter.
Mosley finished with a game-high 20 points along with seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks as the N.C. A&T signee continued her stellar senior campaign.
Union Pines freshman center Tyler Ross turned in another strong showing down low, backing up a 21-rebound, 16-point game against Western Harnett by collecting a 13-rebound, 10-point double-double on Friday along with three blocks. Junior captain Tyesha McLean also hit double figures with 14 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore small forward Crystal Hicks collected 10 rebounds and had six assists, four steals and four points, while sophomore guard Allie Smith scored 10 points, going 5 of 8 from the field.
Yasmine Butler had nine points to lead Southern Lee, which is 8-10 overall and in fifth place in the league with a record of 3-7.
With one week remaining in the regular season, the current standings in the upper half of the Cape Fear Valley Conference are as follows: Westover 14-4, 8-1, Union Pines 16-5, 8-2, Overhills 17-4, 7-3, Western Harnett 18-4, 7-3.
Overhills and Western Harnett will meet Tuesday. Game time for Wednesday's Westover-Union Pines match-up is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Westover is the last team to deal the Vikes a loss this season, as Union Pines dropped a 66-55 result the first time the two teams met.
