Union Pines Splits at Southern Lee

The Union Pines Vikings and Southern Lee Cavaliers split a Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference varsity basketball twin-bill Friday in Sanford.
In the first game the Lady Vikes earned a 58-34 win to move to 16-5 overall on the season and 8-2 in league play, while the Cavaliers are now 3-7 in the conference and 8-10 overall.
Union Pines was led by senior Alishia Mosley's 20 points. Vike junior captain Tyesha McLean scored 11 points, while freshman Tyler Ross had a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double. Union Pines sophomore Crystal Hicks tallied 10 rebounds, six assists, four steals and scored four points.
Mosley scored nine first-quarter points for the second-place Vikings, who opened a 19-9 lead through one quarter, and she finished the half with 13 points to help give Union Pines a 29-15 advantage at intermission.
The Vike boys fell in the nightcap by a score of 60-45 to the Cavaliers.
Trailing 30-22 late in the second quarter, Union Pines closed the period on a 7-1 run capped off by a three at the buzzer by Justin Brabham to trail 31-29 at the half.
However, the Vikes could not find a way to score in the third frame, as Southern Lee opened a 39-32 lead with 5:02 left in the quarter. Union Pines had five total points in the third period and trailed 41-34 as play moved to the last quarter.
The Cavs, who entered the night tied for first in the league standings, used a combination of strong interior defense and offensive rebounding to forge ahead, building a comfortable 50-38 lead at the 2:32 mark to pick up the Senior Night win.
Union Pines is now 10-11 on the year and 5-5 in league play with two games left in its regular season. Senior sharpshooter A.J. Jackson led Southern Lee with 18 points, while his backcourt partner Ace Chalmers had 16. Jon Toomer led the Vikes with 16 points and eight rebounds.
