We Will Return to Self-Reliance

It occurs to me that the lame duck session of Congress produced lots of fodder for our president and some chagrin for those legislators who are retiring of their free will or forced out due to election results.

I predict we will have charges filed by homosexuals and lesbians concerning their treatment in the military as soon as they can get an attorney to defend them — which should not take long.

The incoming Congress will overturn the takeover of our health care industry.

The freshmen will make lots of noise but have little effect on changing the environment in Congress in the short term. Ouster of Obama in 2012 and other incumbents, both parties, in the next few election cycles will hasten change more than any one movement. But change will come.

Law enforcement will be even more hindered in their attempts to protect innocent citizens from those who will prey upon them by the leftist/socialists now in power. People will begin to defend themselves and be criticized by the media and prosecuted for their efforts to protect personal property.

Illegals will begin to assimilate into our society in anticipation of being given amnesty. This will change within two years as the one issue that resonates with most in the United States is immigration reform and control of the borders; we cannot continue to pay their health care, repair our vehicles when damaged by their drunkenness, pay for maintaining two separate languages in our schools and workplaces, etc.

The United States, and elsewhere in the world, will begin to realize that we have raised and encouraged up to four generations to believe they have a sense of entitlement and have no particular ethic beyond self gratification. We will lead in becoming self-reliant again.

Mr. Ward, surely you jest? First you say that illegals will begin to come to our country in an attempt to gain amnesty. Aren't you aware that even George W. Bush, who I assume you greatly admired, was prepared to grant them amnesty because he said there were too many undocumented people in this country? Translation: keen political move on his part to win votes. Then you say there are too many illegals causing drunk driving accidents? Where's your proof? Because someone who has been arrested has an Hispanic name does not make that person illegal. You are operating out of fear, Sir. Come out of your cocoon!

I wonder, Mr. Ward, how you would feel about the government and self-reliance were you born outside of the US, came here when your were three and wanted to better yourself - as a young man- by going to college, joining the armed services even if it meant going into harm's way, or even just taking a job only to find out that each of these stepping stones to self reliance was denied to you. It's easy to talk about being self reliant when your are not hobbled by the hostile attitude of your government and those who judge you solely by where you happened to have been born.

@GoldenDreams

Here is some stat's in regards to illgeals and auto accidents.

A review of State Police auto accident reports for 2002 through 2004 for that area of the Eastern Shore also revealed that of the 179 accidents involving Hispanic laborers: • 75% of the drivers had no auto insurance. • Nearly all of the vehicles driven by migrants were registered to other drivers. • 93% of the vehicles had false out-of-state tags. In 2003 and 2004, 128 of the 395 people, 32.4%, arrested on DUI charges were Hispanic, a rate six times greater than the Hispanic portion of the population

Below is a link where UNC created a study showing that illegals hold the award for highest for DWI traffic accidents in NC.

GoldenDreams 2 years, 4 months ago

Tinman, I read the newspaper article from 2006 that you highlighted. The information is a little different than what Mr. Ward presented. They suggest the problem is more cultural and needs working on, which I agree with. Also, I can assure you I don't live behind a tree. I am a teacher serving mostly an Hispanic population (outside Moore County). Most Hispanic parents want their children to do well, speak English, and obey the laws of the land. There is definitely an adjustment period when first coming here, though, and that needs to be addressed. If not, we end up with problems that may affect all of society, like it or not.

What’s interesting to me is my wife's Mother and Father came from Germany as immigrants and took measures immediately to become legal US Citizens, and did! Their other family members came to the US, and also became legal citizens, they felt from the start it was the right thing to do and they uphold the most respect for the United States of America. They believe in the American dream and fill strongly more than most Americans that ALL migrants and immigrants should follow the process from the beginning.

@GoldenDreams, How long do we have to wait and suffer lives on our highways before the Hispanics get it right? You know it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if Hispanics went through the process to become US citizens, pay taxes, pay insurance like most Americans do, they would be less apt to throw it all away by taking the risk of driving drunk or without license and insurance. I'm not saying that Hispanics are bad people, because they are not. Our Government does not inform and police immigrantion the way it needs to be in regards to our southern borders. I know many Hispanics that have done the right thing and become US citizens, ...funny thing is they are mostly Christian Republican Conservitives.

@realbldr, You are so spot on! I have been involved with Robin Sage for many years and you nailed it.

Tinman, I understand what you're saying to some degree. I am the granddaughter of four immigrants. They came legally from Italy about 90 years ago and had it very tough here. They couldn't speak the language, suffered cruel remarks, and took low-paying jobs to get through. Yet, they made it. They became citizens, the men served our country in the war, and every generation got better. I never forgot the stories of injustice they told me, though, and that's probably why I have a heart for struggling people. If I can help, I try to. I am a Christian who tries to follow Christ as the loving Shepherd. Let me assure you, I do not break any laws or encourage others to.

You mentioned Hispanics getting it right driving on our highways. Yes, there's a problem, but I don't believe it's as bad as the media makes it out to be. I think some of the differences are cultural, and other Hispanics are stepping up to address the issues. If anyone breaks the law, they should be held accountable. But I have never seen a problem and I work with an Hispanic population every day as a teacher. And by the way, most are here legally and I've seen the paperwork to prove it. Some want to become citizens but the backlog is incredible, they tell me.

Do we have an immigration problem? Yes. But no US President has been able to solve it yet. Putting all our anger on immigrants is not the answer. Trying to find a workable solution is.

sgmartin 2 years, 4 months ago

@ realbldr You realize of course that your venom toward Hispanic illegals is precisely the kind of bigotry that the Irish and Italian experienced when they came to America. @bigD - are you quoting God? Check this out http://www.gotquestions.org/God-help-themselves.html

"Question: "God helps those who help themselves - is it in the Bible?" Answer: "God helps those who help themselves" is probably the most often quoted phrase that is not found in the Bible. This saying is usually attributed to Ben Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard's Almanac in 1757. In actuality, it originated from Algernon Sydney in 1698 in an article titled Discourses Concerning Government. Whatever the original source of this saying, the Bible teaches the opposite. God helps the helpless! Isaiah 25:4 declares, "For You have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat..." Romans 5:6 tells us, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly."

0

irkim13 2 years, 4 months ago

Romans 5:6 tells us, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly." Meaning we can not help ourselves into heaven we need Christ. Check out Matthew 25:14-30 and how the persons helping themselves are rewarded.

"Takeover of our health care industry" by whom, exactly? The health care "reform" bill amounted to a giant gift for private insurers. And strangely enough, conservatives praised it when Mitt Romney passed a similar plan as governor.

Wait a minute, there's nothing strange about that sort of hypocrisy at all.

Hispanics are exploited by their own government and drug lords to push drugs into the U.S. for freedom, Hispanics are also exploited by our own Government for votes, liberal agendas such as health care, taxes, not to mention the business owners who hire illegal aliens.

Most illegal Hispanics are good people looking for the American dream (which is in decline), unfortunately they don't see the exploitation they are hindered by.

If Hispanics really wanted to beat the system(s) they would wise up and refuse any amnesty and become "legal" citizens the correct way like everyone else ASAP! This would remove at best the exploitation from the U.S. Politicians looking to pass useless legislation only to convert Capitalism over to a Socialist society.

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

"the correct way like everyone else"? You really don't understand what is involved in immigrating to the US, do you? The very best case scenario is 5-7 years of waiting. If you are not already immediately related to or married to a US citizen, you're not getting in period.

Not to mention the fact that exploiting poor foreign workers is capitalist to its core.

0

pinewoodnc 2 years, 4 months ago

The early immigrants to this country came openly and did what was required to become citizens. They did not come through underground tunnels and locked in the back of trucks so as not to be detected. The hispanics wish to come here, but refuse to learn the language or do whatever is necessary to become citizens legally. I would think that the early immigrants would be disgusted at the thought of a blanket amnesty and citizenship to all the illegals after they followed the legal path to citizenship.

I lived for several years in Texas and saw firsthand the behavior of the illegals. They seem to think the US owes them something. I feel sorry for anyone living somewhere that keeps them from a happy life. However, the US is not the "mama" of the world and we cannot be expected to take care of everyone that is unhappy with their life situation. We don't take care of our own people. How many of our children live in poverty and don't have enough food? Sometimes we seem to be more concerned about what is happening other places instead of our own backyard.

"Anything worth doing is difficult" -Patch Adams

I know exactly what it takes and it does not take 5-7 years. 2-3yrs to be exact, do your homework.

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

Bwahahahhaha.....2-3 years maybe if you are in a sought-after field with several relatives who were born here...if not, tough luck Charlie.

Immigrating to the US without such a thing in your favor is not "difficult" it is literally "impossible." That is a cold hard fact. Find something else to hide your bigotry behind.

0

moonchild7 2 years, 4 months ago

"We will return to self-reliance". Does that mean I need to start raising chickens in my backyard so that when I need to see a doctor I can pay them with one of my hens? Or when it's time for me to die I just walk out into the woods until I can't walk anymore, drop to the ground, pass out and enter that "other world" so my flesh and bones can then turn into mulch? Sorry, Mr. Ward but wagon train days are over. Didn't you get the message?

0

irkim13 2 years, 4 months ago

"We will return to self-reliance" I took it to mean we will not be dependent on the government for any number of things we should not be dependent on.

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

Well James, by your logic having blacks sit at the back of the bus wasn't bigotry because it was "following the law". Stop and ponder for a moment the concept that laws are not always just nor applied equally.

0

moonchild7 2 years, 4 months ago

There are of course lots of things we should be able to provide for ourselves as individuals, except when very rich and powerful "entities" make those provisions too costly, too difficult or too specialized to be able to obtain. Without the government helping the G.I's after WWII with the G.I bill, our middle class might have never grown as upwardly and quickly as it did. Without the help of the government during the depression there would still be people living in POOR HOUSES filled to the rafters. Without the help of the government blacks would still be having to sit in the backs of buses and attend segregated schools. Without government help the infant mortality rate would be very high. What is it then that the government is supposed to provide Americans with? Any social remedies to help it's citizens in case they somehow become homeless, jobless, or mentaly ill? Or should they just provide Americans with an out of control Military Industrial Complex?

0

TinMan 2 years, 4 months ago

@MisterG My entire family on both sides came into the US as immigrants. You accuse me of "Bigotry"??

0

irkim13 2 years, 4 months ago

Per MisterG "Well James, by your logic having blacks sit at the back of the bus wasn't bigotry because it was "following the law". Stop and ponder for a moment the concept that laws are not always just nor applied equally."

I was wondering if anyone knew if this was an actual law on the books or common practice or 'just the way it was'.

0

moonchild7 2 years, 4 months ago

They were the "JIM CROW LAWS" from 1876 to 1965. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made them(finally) illegal.

0

hotdiggity 2 years, 4 months ago

You're correct when one says not every 'law' is just. Just look at the law that says a person can murder the baby developing inside them. "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" Isaiah 5:20

0

What's "racist" is you hiding your anti-hispanic prejudices behind "oh uh, it's just following the law!"

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

Wow James, I'm glad you have these imaginary families to back you up. You apparently missed the part where it is impossible to immigrate to the United States without either having relatives already living here as citizens, or are a highly skilled worker such as a doctor or aerospace engineer (and even then it's an incredibly difficult and lengthy process).

Not that you care; after all, you're white and already live here, so what does it matter?

0

MisterG 2 years, 4 months ago

How unsurprising that you would throw out statistics that are completely irrelevant to what I am actually telling you, before assuming that you won the argument because I don't sit there and refresh this comments page all day.

MisterG, what a ridiculous comment. It seems some of you find it absolutely necessary to "label" folks. I am neither "conservative" nor "liberal." I am a free thinker that uses common sense and logic. Period. Some of you seem to feel it necessary to call names and assume that your opinion is the "only" opinion and if other don't agree, the name calling commenses. What a waste of time and energy.

It is too bad that informative and "polite" exchanges cannot be expressed on these blogs without resorting to one-upmanship and name calling.

.... Emerson advocates self-reliance as a starting point, not as a goal. My opening statement is from an analysis of Emerson's numerous lectures on Self - Reliance. I believe that Mr Ward's comment was meant in this very fashion. We , as a nation, must almost start over or go BACK TO THE FUTURE so to speak. We as a nation built a very strong foundation of hard work, strong family values, moral compasses that made society very easy to navigate in and most importantly the understanding that freedom is earned, preserved and protected. We, as a nation, must not "start over " from what we have learned and improved in many area's : civil rights, technology, manufacturing, aerospace, medicine, etc ... but we must preserve and "re-teach" the items I previously listed. I wish there was an even playing field so to speak in life, but unfortunately that is not reality. Unfortunately in life you have got to do it all ... I will leave this comment with this observation. I was leaving the video store with my family the other evening. I held the door open for my family as they walked out. I saw 2 young ladies walking in, and it was cold, so I held the door open for them. They were aprox (13-16) and I could hear their conversation as they walked in. It was about someone ( gossip ) and everyother word was a f-bomb and/or some other cuss word. They walked past me, my family, did not "tone down" their comments, did not say thank you for holding the door and in fact was loud and distracting in the video store .... Teen agers will be teen agers, but they did not have the social awareness that their language and behavior was unacceptable. It was about self gratification, tearing down the person they were talking about and in general a complete disregard for anyone else around them. Perhaps Mr Ward's comments are a great place for this country to start ..... and self reliance is not a conservative tone ; it about building a strong foundation to start your life.
