Suspected Drunk Driver Hits Cars, Flees from Police

An Aberdeen man is facing multiple charges after he apparently drove drunk through downtown Pinehurst, hit several parked cars and then fled from police.

Coy Robert McMillan, 23, was arrested Saturday night near the Tater Barn on McIntyre Road. Police charged him with driving while impaired (DWI), careless and reckless driving, driving without insurance, hit and run property damage, displaying a revoked registration plate and a drivers’ license violation, according to Pinehurst Police.

Police say McMillan had been drinking in a downtown establishment when he left and got behind the wheel of his Dodge truck.

“He backed into a car on Dogwood, went down Market Square, turned left on Magnolia and then went left on Chinquapin,” said Capt. Floyd Thomas, of the Pinehurst Police Department. “At the intersection of Chinquapin and Cherokee, where the Christmas lights are, he hit a stop sign, a street sign, a yield sign and a planter.”.

McMillan then turned onto Cherokee and “plowed five cars near the Holly Inn,” Thomas said.

After hitting the cars, Thomas said McMillan attempted to turn left onto Everette Road, but stalled the truck when he drove it up on the curb and then fled on foot.

Officers arrested him on McIntyre near the Tater Barn with the keys to the truck in his possession, Thomas said.

Thomas said McMillan had a blood alcohol level of .22 and his license is revoked and on indefinite suspension from a 2008 DWI conviction in Richmond County.

His vehicle was seized following the incident.

Well hopefullty they put his rear end in jail!!!! He is driving revoked. It's obvious having no license isn't going to deter this gentlemen from driving. Give him the crowbar hotel 12 step program.

Thank goodness nobody was hurt! People like him are so dangerous to everyone else driving around, it's why I hate being out late at night, because you run the risk of meeting someone like him on the road.

ok folks who had their vehicles damaged by this idiot- now you are an at risk driver if you file your insurance to have your car repaired! doesnt matter the circumstances, your fault or not, your premiums will go up!! I had a state snow plow in 2005 shove a big chunk of ice off an overpass up US 1 right through my windshield, claimed it on insurance, at risk driver-welcome insurance premiums!! ever notice the auto insurance companies are your best friends until you have to file a claim? pay your premiums, when you need them they will want more!

Wait a minute. Was the driver a illegal? Did he cross the border ilegally? I am trying and trying to find a hispanic name in this article, but I cannot find it. Isn't it amazing that is so easy for us to blame EVERYTHING that happens in our community to the "illegals"?

"He drove it up on the curb and then fled on foot. Officers arrested him on McIntyre near the Tater Barn".

I would like to think that Mr. McMillan just got a little disoriented on his way to turn himself into the PPD.

Also, Why is the Tater Barn mentioned and not the so-called 'downtown establishment' ? Is the Tater Barn uptown ? Through logical deduction, I would say, The PineCrest Inn took his money and tanked him up, but doesn't want the negativity. So The Pilot alludes to the Tator Barn. Shame Shame

PS, realbldr, Feliz Navidad !!

So a story about a drunk driving resident of Aberdeen named Coy McMillan results in responses on this website that berates politicians, insurance companies, Mexicans and liberals. I'm amazed this country has lasted as long as it has based on the intelligence of some of the citizens. How about being angry about Coy McMillan or drunk driving or the bar that served the scumbag all the booze. I hope when the facts all come out that McMillan is a right wing rich white Republican, a charter member of the TP and a deacon at his church.

A boy named Coy crashed his big 'ol truck near the Tater Barn, you say?

Good gravy, I think I may have come just a bit too far South...

Zoey Says "Through logical deduction, I would say, The PineCrest Inn took his money and tanked him up" Your deduction is not all that logical. It is more logical by the explanation of directions given, that he was parked along Dugans Restaurant side, backed into the cars parked directly behind (along the swimming pool of the Holly Inn) Drove down past dugans entrance and came back full circle. Dont point your fingers at Pinecrest Inn. I'm not saying that Dugans is responsible either. He could of been parked there and bar hopped Darling House, Dugans and/or Pinecrest. OR gone into the apartments above Dugans and drank up there. They just used Tater Barn as a point of reference.

Good point @flabbergasted! I have never figured out why people get so vindictive at the bar that serves someone who later does something like this. Very often a person does not appear as drunk as they are to a waitperson or bartender, it should not be their responsibility to police every customer...WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS. If this moron went to the ABC store, bought a half gallon of cheap vodka, and drank it in his truck or at a person's home, is the ABC store to blame in any way? Or the grocery store that sold the beer? This person is clearly a menace, and yet somehow he still had access to the truck and went out on the roads. Something tells me he was going to cause trouble no matter where he went. Lock him up and keep him there, he is the one at fault, and only him!

According to Facebook he is a right winger. He's a cowboy who doesn't want to press 1 for English and is not a fan Obama....Imagine that.

Perfect point on how he is only 23 and not the usual age bracket for the local Pinecrest Clientele. I was going to mention that exact point, but figured that would lead off to another debate.

per leftfield, according to his FB profile... "He's a cowboy" What a prize...this DUI kid thinks he is a "cowboy". News flash: just because you like country music and drive a truck, it does not make you a cowboy. Neither does putting a "cowboy up" sticker on said truck. It's like saying you are a cop because you own a blue hat and like watching Law & Order on t.v.

This guy should never drive another vehicle for the rest of his life. Having just gotten off work and not a single drink in me, I witnessed him getting into his truck in front of Dugan's fumbling with his keys...obviously wasted. As I was parking my car on Market Sq he floored his truck and flew past me fishtailing all over the the wet street narrowly missing several vehicles before slamming on his breaks and whipping the truck around to start speeding up Magnolia and then the same thing onto Chinquapin. All you could hear was tires squealing and his engine floored until he started hitting the street signs and divider. Next he came into view again and started sideswiping several cars in front of the Holly Inn at high speed and showed no signs of stopping until his truck seemingly got lodged into another vehicle at which point a lot of people in front of Dugans started screaming for him to stop and others started running towards his truck. Cowboy Coy then unstuck himself by slamming the truck in reverse and gunning it forward once again before stalling out on the curb on the other side of the street.

Against my better judgment I ran to try and stop him or help potential injured until others that ran towards him yelled he had a gun. At that point my better judgment kicked in and I headed back towards Dugans. This idiot Cowboy Coy could have killed countless people with his 7000 pound battering ram and utter disregard for what he was running into. He was doing everything in his impaired power to flee the scene in his vehicle. Completely surreal and frightening experience. I hope they bury him under the jail and he never gets a chance to reproduce to make more of his kind.

Wow, excitement in Pinehurst that turned dangerous.

truethat 2 years, 5 months ago

realblr...I agree that Pinehurst cops write too many tickets instead of issuing warnings for ticky tacky things.

But this guy is going to get far worse than probation and community service if there is any justice in Pinehurst.

BTW not first offense...this guy is a real winner at the ripe age of 23...just lucky he didn't add vehicular homicide to his list of cowboy accomplishments. he has avoided prison long enough...throw away the key.

No record of him in county jail. http://www.moorecountync.gov:81/dcn/

Would someone that started lobbing grenades indiscriminately in a relatively busy late night downtown Pinehurst be allowed to be bailed out the next day? That is essentially what this lunatic was doing. What a joke.

Flabbergasted, I really don't care if it was Dugans, PineCrest, or any of the other establishments within 'stumbling' distance from one another. Point was, and is, the "only" drinking establishment named, was the Tater Barn. Doesn't the Tater Barn and Lindas share a dirt parking lot? The so-called 'point of reference' is alluding. Maybe he was going to enter the TB, who knows? Maybe we'll get an update...

listenup says... "WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN ACTIONS" True, but as bartenders, friends, family members, etc., we should do everything in our power to stop someone who is, 'fumbling with his keys...obviously wasted' from getiing onto our highways. You're right, it's called Responsiblility, or you may become an Accessory!

Happy Holidays and Drink in Moderation, if you must....

Flabbergasted 2 years, 5 months ago

Zoey, You state you dont care what establishment it was, but you pointed your finger directly at the Pinecrest in a negative way without even knowing any of the facts. All I was trying to point out, was to think outside of the box. How is the point of reference "alluding"? He was caught on McIntyre which is where the Tater Barn is. Lindas in on McCaskill. It wasnt to give them bad publicity. We have no time stamps. For all we know, they could of been closed. For a good eyewitness account read above from Truethat who was there. The only thing that matters is that no one was hurt and he was caught. Like truethat said "I hope they bury him under the jail!!" Good night, and good luck!

what he really needs is a vacation - in prison - for 2-3 years. He is habitual and will eventually prove fatal to some unlucky person!

A shame he will probably plea bargain his way out of this - again!
